In crude distillation, there are thousands of different compounds present having a virtually continuous spectrum of boiling points. It would be impractical to consider each of these compounds in describing the crude or designing the equipment to process it. Instead the crude is treated as if it were composed of a manageable number (< 50) of pseudo components. These are defined by dividing the crude distillation curve into a series of adjacent boiling cuts. 

As every experienced manager knows, for systems to work, they must be "ours " they are endorsed, or "owned," by the people who use them. In fact, virtually every management system—PSM included—is effective in direct proportion to the degree of this sense of ownership or investment. Since the PSM system will affect so many people in your company, it s important that you make the effort to gain their understanding and support. 

Training in the system. Your company s managers must be both competent and confident in terms of their ability to explain—and enforce—the PSM system. For this reason you should consider training that covers the entire PSM system, rather than just those aspects of it for which a ven manager has direct responsibility. This approach may also be far more cost-effective, in that a single core module can apply to virtually every company manager.

As you will remember from our conclusions in Chapter 3, virtually all companies that contributed case studies to our book incorporated expectation management into their training sessions. One more example of the similar reaction is the addition of bromotrichloromethane to (S)-l-acryloyl-2-methoxycarbonylpirrolidine catalyzed with system [Fe(CO)5 + PPh3] (75°C) (ref, 18). The second type is the WAN (wide area network) installation. In this setup the LIMS take advantage of telecommunication technology to cover a great distance. The setup can also be used to connect disparate LANs together. In this configuration, the LIMS are installed on both the clients and a central server. The third type is the so-called centrally hosted thin client installation . For this setup, system administration is managed at a corporate center, where the LIMS are hosted and distributed via a WAN or the Internet with a virtual private network (VPN). The last and also the newest type is the ASP (Application Service Provision provider)-hosted installation. In this setup, the LIMS are hosted on a centrally managed server form and maintained by third-party specialists. Users access the LIMS with any Internet-connected PC with a standard Web browser. 

Austria showed a 60% reduction in solvent used by customers. Virtually all of that solvent would have been released into the environment or would have become a hazardous waste stream to be managed. 

This author has not heard any reports at compound management conferences of significant problems initially dissolving compounds in dry DMSO. In the author s experience initial solubilization of compounds in DMSO is seldom a problem. At the author s Pfizer lab over 40 000 compounds were dissolved in DMSO at a 60 mM concentration. Problems dissolving a wide range of structures were so few that they were not worth tracking. However, virtually none of these 40000 compounds dissolved were crystalline. 

The technology of deep-well injection has been around for more than 70 years. Most Americans would be surprised to know that there is a waste management system already in operation in the U.S. that has no emissions into the air, no discharges to surface water, and no off-site transfers, and exposes people and the environment to virtually no hazards. 1 The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) has stated that Class 1 wells are safer than virtually all other waste disposal practices for many chemical industry wastes.
