Verbal commitment

Section 1 General Information — The main conclusion of this section is that when it comes to safety, cost doesn t appear to be an issue. Results from safety leaders responses demonstrate a strong verbal commitment toward safety, even when in competition with economic and customer service issues.

You know your interpersonal conversation is especially productive when someone makes a commitment to improve in a certain way. This reflects success in moving conversation from the past to tiie future and then to a specific action plan. A verbal commitment also tells you that something is happening on an intrapersonal level within that other person. The person is becoming self-motivated, increasing tire probability the target behavior will improve (Cialdini, 1993). 

It is consistent with this close mental and verbal association between" crime and madness that commitment laws are formulated in terms of the individual s supposed dangerousness (to himself and others), rather than in terms of his health and illness. Dangerousness, of course, is a characteristic the alleged mental patient shares with the criminal, rather than with the medically ill person. 

The responses on the lES were checked to ensure that the index incidents were consistent with DSM-IV or ICD-10 conceptualizations of incidents which may lead to PTSD, and they had to be work-related. As a result, an lES group was created in which the index incidents were consistent with the noted diagnostic systems (n = 99). Index incidents which were consistent included attending major transport accidents, dealing with dead bodies/ serious injury, being physically attacked and having patients commit suicide. Incidents which were not consistent included general situational factors (e.g. bad week at work ), verbal incidents (e.g. a client verbally threatened me , my supervisor shouted at me ) or personal incidents which were unrelated to... 

This need to observe, interview, test, and probe operators in the course of cognitive analysis implies that the role of operators in the conduct of analysis is crucial. Inference of cognitive activities and elicitation of their competencies cannot be realized without their active participation. Consequently, explicit presentation of the scope of analysis and commitment of their willingness to provide information are prerequisites in the conduct of CTA. Therefore, modifications are to be made to fit the culture and the inherent hazards and risks in an organization. For example, is it necessary that there be a documented occupational health and safety policy, as ZIO requires for every location Or, is it appropriate to recognize that for a small operation having as few as 10 employees, a verbal and demonstrated commitment by management to achieving superior control of hazards and risks is sufficient ... 

Establish an enforceable eye protection policy with real consequences. A hierarchy of one verbal warning, a written warning, loss of lab period/grade, and expulsion from the laboratory course works well at the college level. The policy should be presented in writing the first day of lab, posted in the department and issued at the time of each violation. Keep copies with the Department Chair, and maintain accurate records of all violations. Expect a protest if a student is removed from laboratory. If you are firm and consistent with high expectations, students will respect the concern shown for their safety. A student who is a consistent violator can be made to read the Safety Plan and write a report contrasting it with the OSHA Standards. This helps the plan author as well as the student. The overall commitment from faculty, staff and students is enhanced. 

Constant, personal verbal assaults on your character, name calling, belittling, zealons attention to unimportant details, committed to systematic destruction of yonr confidence in yonr competence. 

Now you can proceed to talk about how that commitment can be supported or how to hold the individual accountable. For example, one person might offer to help a coworker meef an obligation through verbal reminders or an individual might agree to honor a commitment by showing a coach behavioral records that indicate improvement. This is, of course, the kind of follow-up conversation fhat facilitates personal achievement.
