Examining the lists above makes it clear that a good toller-client relationship with open and honest communication of process safety information, process hazard analysis input and early recognition of issues can help avoid potential problems. [Pg.8]

Be honest, frank, and open. In communicating risk information, trust and credibility are your most precious assets. [Pg.529]

During the next days I was called on often to answer this charge. There was quite a flurry at the Grand Hotel, center of American community life in Numberg. One day Judge Shake, a medium-built man with a look of honest curiosity, greeted me from his chair in the lobby. He was reading the Stars and Stripes. It was ridiculous — but I felt ill at ease. Four of the ten people named I didn t know at all. Suppose one of them was a Communist I shook off the question. [Pg.72]

I don t want it to sound as if I m protecting her. I m not. One of the reasons we ve been married so long is because we have a real open line of communication and we re honest with each other and try to deal with everything out in the open. We try to be emotionally honest with each other. But it s difficult to discuss with her how I am feeling about her condition, or how it affects me. Those discussions are difficult. We still haven t fully developed a language that works for us. [Pg.255]

Slow escalation and hiding intentions when at risk of failure on the sender s side is is paired with a cognitive apparatus which tries to unravel the intentions on the receivers side. This situation will force communication to a level where the receiver might not be able to asses consciously the manipulation which is underway. The receiver then has to look for honest and develop strategies for mindreading. ... [Pg.99]

Even so, as I hope to show here, there are clear tensions between our many contradictory desires we want to be good citizens, good consumers, and good environmental stewards, a triumvirate that may simply be unachievable. Born of class-based identities and community ideologies, the specific forms that these honest desires take are all further enmeshed in a larger political economy. Simply because we wish to avoid classist analysis, does not mean we should avoid class analysis. [Pg.209]

The IG report criticizes this consent form for not guaranteeing adequate discussion of the nature and hazards of the experiment. This was particularly true for the early volunteer records. Establishment of trust, however, was always a priority. No one can predict all the symptoms or mishaps that might conceivably occur. Ultimately, the volunteer s confidence in the physician s integrity and concern for his well-being is paramount. The concept of informed consenf remains as slippery today as it was in the sixties. Honest communication remains more important than fine print in a contract. [Pg.251]

The trend was definitely toward the principle of fixed composition, but the empirical evidence in its support was still unreliable and allowed room for the doubts of the honest sceptic. Credit is usually given to Joseph-Louis Proust for bringing the law of definite proportions into the continuing consciousness of the chemical community. Proust thought his data justified the assumption of fixed composition and took it as a firm operating principle, very much as Lavoisier had assumed the conservation principle as an axiom. For example, Proust claimed that the quantity of copper oxide prepared from copper carbonate was always the same whatever process used, and that every chemical entity was characterized by a fixed composition. [Pg.231]

To make money, people sometimes select jobs that fall short of what they enjoy. A paycheck helps compensate for the effort. With no pay, a person should be careful. The key to the right volunteer activity is to know yourself and be honest with yourself. This means matching that which provides the most rewards for you with what is available in your community. If your rewards are right, you will probably stick with it. If the rewards are not right, you should leave. Your volunteer role should do something for the organization, but it also should do something for you. [Pg.85]

Much attention has been garnered by principles of communication that professionals are advised to follow. Well-known examples are seven principles articulated for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) accept and involve the public as a legitimate partner (see our Chapter 4) plan carefully and evaluate efforts (Chapter 4) listen to the public s specific concerns (Chapter 4) be honest, frank, and open coordinate and collaborate with other credible sources meet the needs of the media and speak clearly and with compassion (Covello and Allen 1988). Those and related principles have face validity and often practical utility despite their apparent obviousness and abstractness. For example, treating your constituents as though they are ignorant, hysterical, self-interested, or ideologically... [Pg.230]

Carpenter (1995) noted that the client/recipient might prefer unambiguous predictions and advice now to candor about uncertainties, but environmental professionals credibility will disappear if events. . . show them to be substantially wrong. However, White and Eiser (in press) suggested that trust experiments show that if, in the face of uncertainty, professionals make a mistake. .. of the right kind [such as a precautionary rather than risk-taking action on the public s behalf, it] could actually make them seem more trustworthy to lay observers because a) it shows they are open and honest and b) people accept that even experts make mistakes sometimes. Thus, the results of communicating about uncertainty depend on the context. [Pg.233]

An essential element of any medical program is informed patient consent prior to the performance of any test or procedure. Although informed consent is not specifically mentioned in the ACOEM components of occupational and environmental health programs, it is inherent in the ethical practice of medicine. The ACOEM Code of Ethical Conduct (adopted October 25,1993) states that physicians should relate honestly and ethically in all professional relationships. Also, the Association of Occupational and Environmental Clinics has issued guidance relative to patient consent, confidentiality of medical records, and communication of the results of tests and procedures (AOEC, 1987). [Pg.38]

Manpower International conducted a loyalty survey in 2002 that foxmd that the top three loyalty drivers are strong leadership, strong teamwork, and open and honest communication. [Pg.88]

Gouzoules, Harold. Primate Communication By Nature Honest, Or By Experience Wise. International Journal of Primatology 23, no. 4 (2002) 821-848. [Pg.411]

Since the operation of cortical neurons belonging to Groups 3 or 4 is inseparable not only from cognitive/volitional perception, but also from an affective state of consciousness, it is a natural law that the individual strives for pleasant goals and tries to avoid unpleasant operations. Accordingly, the community manipulates its subjects with a sophisticated system of time-honored rewards and punishments. The creation of the myth of an other world was the most influential invention of the past that rendered the maintenance of peaceful order in human society possible. According to this myth, the soul is immortal. The short, transient earthly period of fife is therefore of minor importance. A human whose earthly existence was honest reaps his reward in the other world, while the evil-hearted receives severe punishment. [Pg.130]
