Vegetable oil epoxides can be cured in simUar ways to petroleum-based epoxy derivatives using amines, isocyanates, mercaptans or anhydrides to manufacture the epoxy resins. Today, epoxy resins are a very important class of materials, widely used in many applications as insulators, as weU as in the automobile, electrical and electronics industries due to their excellent chanical resistance, exceptional adhesion to a variety of materials, high tensile and compressive strength, and outstanding electrical insulation properties. [Pg.126]

In polymer applications derivatives of oils and fats, such as epoxides, polyols and dimerizations products based on unsaturated fatty acids, are used as plastic additives or components for composites or polymers like polyamides and polyurethanes. In the lubricant sector oleochemically-based fatty acid esters have proved to be powerful alternatives to conventional mineral oil products. For home and personal care applications a wide range of products, such as surfactants, emulsifiers, emollients and waxes, based on vegetable oil derivatives has provided extraordinary performance benefits to the end-customer. Performic acid is an unstable, hazardous percarboxylic acid, and must always be generated in situ. Epoxidation with in situ performic and peracetic acid are well established commercial processes. They find application in the epoxidation of alkenes, particularly those of high molecular weight.
