Sorbic acid is not only suitable for preservation of feedstuffs but also improves the feed utilisation and weight gain of chickens. This has proven to be of economic value under practical conditions when sorbic acid is added to the feed at 0.02—0.04 wt % (143—145). ZnTe The electrodeposition of ZnTe was published quite recently [58]. The authors prepared a liquid that contained ZnGl2 and [EMIM]G1 in a molar ratio of 40 60. Propylene carbonate was used as a co-solvent, to provide melting points near room temperature, and 8-quinolinol was added to shift the reduction potential for Te to more negative values. Under certain potentiostatic conditions, stoichiometric deposition could be obtained. After thermal annealing, the band gap was determined by absorption spectroscopy to be 2.3 eV, in excellent agreement with ZnTe made by other methods. This study convincingly demonstrated that wide band gap semiconductors can be made from ionic liquids. [Pg.304]

Chemical relaxation techniques were conceived and implemented by M. Eigen, who received the 1967 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work. In a relaxation measurement, one perturbs a previously established chemical equilibrium by a sudden change in a physical variable, such as temperature, pressure, or electric field strength. The experiment is carried out so that the time for the change to be applied is much shorter than that for the chemical reaction to shift to its new equilibrium position. That is to say, the alteration in the physical variable changes the equilibrium constant of the reaction. The Table shows a great spread in Kd-values even at the same location. This is due to the fact that the environmental conditions influence the partition of plutonium species between different valency states and complexes. For the different actinides, it is found that the Kd-values under otherwise identical conditions (e.g. for the uptake of plutonium on geologic materials or in organisms) decrease in the order Pu>Am>U>Np (15). Because neptunium is usually pentavalent, uranium hexavalent and americium trivalent, while plutonium in natural systems is mainly tetravalent, it is clear from the actinide homologue properties that the oxidation state of plutonium will affect the observed Kd-value. The oxidation state of plutonium depends on the redox potential (Eh-value) of the ground water and its content of oxidants or reductants. It is also found that natural ligands like C032- and fulvic acids, which complex plutonium (see next section), also influence the Kd-value. [Pg.278]

Most biological reactions fall into the categories of first-order or second-order reactions, and we will discuss these in more detail below.
