Vaccination Immunization

Hepatitis B. Although Hepatitis B (Hep B) is not an infant disease, it is recommended for infant immunization to better control spread, because compliance with vaccine immunization programs is easier to achieve Hi an infant population. Infants receive immunizations at bHth, 1—2 months. [Pg.357]

There is the potential to develop a protective vaccine/immunization programme for each and every infectious disease. Whether or not such vaccines are developed and deployed is related to the severity and economic impact of the disease upon the eommunity as well as the effects upon the individual. Principles of immunity and of the produetion and quality control of immunological products are discussed in Chapters 14 and 15, respeetively. [Pg.325]

Pre-exposure prophylaxis with IGIM is indicated for individuals at high risk of acquiring the HAV who cannot receive the hepatitis A vaccine (e.g., because of allergy to the components alum or 2-phenoxyethanol). Additionally, travelers who plan to depart for endemic areas within 2 weeks and have not yet received the hepatitis A vaccine should receive IGIM because active vaccine immunity takes several weeks to develop. [Pg.351]

Signs and Symptoms Clinical symptoms in humans similar to that seen in smallpox although often milder. Symptoms include extreme fatigue, fever, muscular, and back pain, with evolution of discolored spots (maculas) progressing successively to elevated bumps (papules), blisters (vesicles), pus filled pimples (pustules), and finally scabs. In addition, infected persons experience enlarged neck and groin lymph nodes. Vaccination with the smallpox vaccine immunizes against monkeypox. [Pg.559]

Vaccines Immunization may be ineffective when given during methotrexate therapy. Immunization with live virus vaccines is generally not recommended. Disseminated vaccinia infections after smallpox immunization have occurred in patients receiving methotrexate. [Pg.1975]

Monoclonal antibody therapy (MAT) makes use of all the major features of the immune response. It involves vaccination/ immunization, albeit in experimental animals, to induce the desired specific immune response. It exploits the high specificity, selectivity, and affinity of the antibody CDR toward the target antigen to be recognized, highlighted, inactivated, or eliminated, using the characteristics of the Fc portion of an immunoglobulin to facilitate the means for such inactivation or elimination and for selection of appropriate effector mechanisms. Finally, MAT represents a modern form of serotherapy, in which parenteral administration of whole serum or Ig preparations has been replaced by recombinant antibody molecules of a defined specificity. [Pg.371]

The efficacy of polysaccharide vaccine in preventing invasive pnenmococcal disease, pnenmonia, and death has been assessed in a donble-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial in 1392 HIVl-infected adnlts in Uganda (14). The vaccine was well tolerated. However, it was ineffective and is not recommended for nse in HIVl-infected indivi-dnals. Reassessment of recommendations for polysaccharide vaccine immunization may be necessary in some countries. The authors suggested that the vaccine causes destruction of polysaccharide-responsive B cell clones. [Pg.2875]
