Firefighters are often asked to speak to school and community groups about the importance of fire safety, particularly fire prevention and detection. Because smoke detectors reduce the risk of dying in a fire by half, firefighters often provide audiences with information on how to install these protective devices in their homes. 

Other participants can be involved in a full time or in a limited consulting role depending on the nature of the incident, ft is important to include people who know what actually happens in the field—not just what is supposed to happen. The team selection should be able to withstand third party scrutiny such as that of employees, departments, union representatives, community groups, and legal. Some companies include trade union safety representatives in the incident investigation. Positions to consider include ...

Althougli a plan for a city dii ided by a river may not be applicable to a desert city on a seismic fault, duplication can be an enemy of cost efficiency. Thus wherever possible, any emergency plans diat already exist in die community should be used as a starting point. Community groups diat may have developed such plans include civil defense organizadons, fire departments, the Red Cross, public liealdi agencies, and local industry councils. Existing plans sliould be studied and dieir applicability to the proposed community plan evaluated.
