Local modulation through the dendritic release of DA occurs in both the SN and the VTA. Ultrastructural observations have been made with immunolocalization of the vesicular monoamine transporter-2 as marker for sites of intracellular monoamine storage within SN and VTA dopaminergic neurons identified by TH immunoreactivity (Nirenberg et al., 1996a). This study has reported that DA is stored in and may be released from dendritic small synaptic vesicles or large dense-core vesicles, while the smooth endoplasmic reticulum represents the main site for the DA storage. [Pg.25]

The ultrastructural observations of Sesack et al. (1998) indicated that considerable extracellular diffusion of DA in the prelimbic prefrontal cortex may result, at least in part, from a paucity of DAT content in dopaminergic mesocortical axons, as well as from a distribution of DAT protein at a distance from synaptic release sites. In this study, DAT-immunoreactive profiles in the striatum and in the cingulate cortex included both varicose and intervaricose segments of axons, but intervaricose axon segments predominated in the prelimbic cortex. [Pg.63]

Utilization of phosphate monoesters by microalgae and bacteria is effected by phosphomonoesterases (phosphatases) of broad specificity present at the cell surface. Hydrolytic release of PO4- from sugar phosphates, nucleotide phosphates, phospholipids, and phenyl phosphates, to name a few, enables a wide variety of phosphorus containing compounds to be utilized as phosphorus sources for growth of microbes. Ultrastructural observations and results from biochemical experiments indicate that extracellular phosphatases cleave the phosphate moiety from dissolved organic phosphorus compounds, which is then internalized, leaving the carbon skeleton outside the cell (Kuenzler and Perras, 1965 Doonan and Jensen, 1977). [Pg.251]

MICROSCOPY AND ULTRASTRUCTURAL OBSERVATIONS OF HUMAN VESICANT INJURIES... [Pg.434]

The authors concluded that sulphur mustard injury to human skin commences at the level of the basal keratinocyte and thus confirmed the original theories of McAdams (1956). They also drew some parallels with thermal injury, which is also thought to act by disrupting the basal epidermal layer (Cullumbine, 1947). These ultrastructural observations and the belief that blistering results from dermo-epidermal separation at the level of the epidermal basement membrane have now been confirmed by im-munohistochemical studies (Lindsay and Rice, 1995). [Pg.435]

Immunohistochemistry is a valuable technique used to accurately diagnose primary and metastatic tumors of the lung and pleura. As with all adjuvant diagnostic pathologic techniques, the results of immunohistochem-ical tests must be correlated with histological, histo-chemical, and ultrastructural observations and with clinical observations. [Pg.452]

Ultrastructural observations suggested that during invasion Plasmodium rhoptries extrude copious membranous material (see ref. 6 and references therein), which may provide a matrix for rhoptry proteins (13). Some rhoptry proteins bind to both erythrocyte inside-out vesicles and to vesicles prepared from phospholipids predominant in the erythrocyte membrane inner leaflet, particularly phosphatidylserine (PS) and phosphatidylinositol (PI) (14,15). One has been shown to intercalate into the erythrocyte membrane (16). These proteins, the RHOP-H complex and SERA, are proposed to integrate differentially into the erythrocyte membrane upon invasion, causing an inward membrane expansion, to produce the parasitophorous vacuole. [Pg.135]

Secondly, ultrastructural observations of migrating crest cells in the embryo reveal contacts between the surface of migrating cells and microenvironmental features, such as ECM fibrils and the surfaces of other cells, which are identical to the adhesive contacts observed in vitro (Bancroft and Bellairs, 1976 Newgreen et al., 1982). [Pg.51]
