Phosphorus containing compounds

The feasibility of using triethyl phosphate (66), whose flash point is extronely high, as a nonflammable solvent was discovered by Mitsui Chemicals and Sony Corporation in 1994 [95]. Details are presented later in the section concerning safety. 

In 1998, Wilson Greatbatch Technologies discovered that phosphates with unsaturated bonds, such as triaUyl phosphate (67) and tripropargyl phosphate (68), 

In 2003, Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation found that the cyclic phosphate 2-ethoxy-l,2-oxaphospholane 2-oxide (71) can be used as an additive in small quantities [98], 

Dembitsky and coworkers 164-169) found phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylser-ine in Pseudevernia furfuracea and other lichens.

Not only do heavy-metal ions catalyze the destruction of peroxide compounds but they also catalyze other chemical processes caused by oxygen and air. Sequestering these metal ions by phosphorus-containing compounds will decrease their undesired effects. 

As a result of different chemical surroundings the resonance frequency absorption will show definite peaks registered by Fourier transform technique. Compared to an internal standard the intensity of the signals is used for quantitative determination of different phosphorus-containing compounds in a given sample. 

The term phospho- is used for (H0)2P(0)- or ionized forms in a biochemical context (see recommendations for the nomenclature of phosphorus-containing compounds [24]). 

Clindamycin (93 R = H), an antibiotic obtained by chlorinating linco-mycin, is converted by a species of Streptomyces into inactive phosphorus-containing compounds. These have been shown to be nucleoside 5 -phosphates derived from adenosine, cytidine, guanosine, and uridine.

A linear dependence between detector response and the amount of sample entering the detector is expected for phosphorus and is generally found. Deviations from the predicted detector response are more common with sulfur-containing than phosphorus-containing compounds (171,173). Analysis of the Murchison meteorite led to a completely different type of phosphorus compound the only phosphorus-containing compounds found were alkanephos-phonic acids. Spurred on by these results, de Graaf et al. (1995) irradiated mixtures of o-phosphorous acid in the presence of formaldehyde, primary alcohols or acetone with UV light (low pressure Hg lamp, 254 nm with a 185-nm component) and obtained phosphonic acids, including hydroxymethyl and hydroxyethyl phosphonic acids, which had been found in the Murchison meteorite. Alkanephosphonic acids can be derived from phosphorous acid, with a P-H bond being replaced by a P-C bond. 

The reagent does not replace nitrogen atoms, and N-alkyl or N-aryl anthranilic acids yield 2,l-benzisothiazoline-3-thiones (94) on heating with phosphorus pentasulfide in xylene. Curiously, when alkyl iV-arylanthranilates are treated in the same way, only a very small proportion—less than 10%— of 94 is obtained. The major product (80%) is the cyclic phosphorus-containing compound (95), the identification of which gives some clue about the structures of possible intermediates.122...

The nitrogen-phosphorus detector (NPD) is, as the name implies, preferentially sensitive to nitrogen and phosphorus atoms. The detector contains a ceramic bead formed with an alkali salt, such as rubidium or cesium. The bead is heated in the presence of hydrogen, but the flow of gas is limited so that no flame is present. As the column effluent passes around the bead, nitrogen- and phosphorus-containing compounds produce electronegative moieties, which are treated as an increase in current and recorded as peaks (Carlsson et al., 2001). 

Recently, work has been undertaken to develop an on-hne microwave analyser. Acidified sample is injected into a carrier stream which passes into a microwave oven. During the digestion period of 1 min, phosphorus-containing compounds are converted into the orthophosphate form. After coohng, reagents are added to form phosphomolybdenum blue, which is measured spectrophotometrically at 690 nm.
