Evaluation of the economics of mental illness in primary care is an ongoing initiative of the UK Department of Health (Lloyd and Jenkins, 1995). A similar American study in Washington State included sub-threshold anxiety or depression, but these imposed relatively little economic load compared with disorder-level anxiety or depression (Simon et al, 1995). Mental health treatment accounted for only a small part of overall utilization, approximately 5%. Nevertheless, most patients with anxiety or depressive disorders showed considerable improvement. This was accompanied by only modest reductions in cost. [Pg.61]

Our empirical evaluation of competition between pharmaceuticals was based on information on prescription drug consumption by non-hospital patients in the National Health Service (NHS) in England in 19% and the Sistema Nacional de Salud or SNS (National Health System) in Spain in 1997. The authors wish to thank Statistics Division IE of the UK Department of Health and the Directorate-General of Pharmacy and Health Products of the Spanish Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs for supplying us with these data. As can be seen from Table 4.1, public consumption of pharmaceuticals... [Pg.62]

At the same time Wakefield and co-workers " described an inflammatory bowel condition apparently related to young children with an ASD. As a tentative suggestion the possibility that this might also be related to MMR vaccination was raised which resulted in cries of dismay, mostly from the UK Department of Health but also from certain sections of the medical profession. There is certainly good evidence that these disorders are chronologically related to the time of MMR vaccination and, in addition, measles virus, sometimes claimed to be of vaccine origin, has been found in bowel tissue but a convincing causal relationship has been widely discounted. [Pg.437]

The UK Department of Health negotiates with companies a maximum rate of return on capital employed in their sales to the National Health Service. An overall rate is fixed for the industry as a whole and within this figure an indivi dual firm is awarded a particular rate having regard to the scale and nature of the company s relevant investments and activities and the associated long-term risks . The system may perhaps have to be changed because of EC legislation. [Pg.746]

As mefloquine is rapidly absorbed it has been suggested that by 8 hours after a dose, the levels of mefloquine will be insufficient to inhibit live oral typhoid vaccine. Based on the results of the above study the US manufae-turers note that mefloquine ean be given at the same time as oral typhoid vaccine. The UK manufaeturers of the oral typhoid vaeeine reeommend separating the dose of oral typhoid vaccine and mefloquine by at least 12 hours. However, the manufacturers of mefloquine say that immunisation with vaeeines sueh as oral typhoid should be eompleted at least 3 days before the first dose of mefloquine. The UK Department of Health say that mefloquine ean be given 12 hours before or after vaeeination with oral typhoid vaeeine. It would therefore seem acceptable to separate administration by 12 hours. Note that this advice does not apply to the capsular polysaccharide typhoid vaccine for injection. [Pg.234]
