There are two important steps that we must follow. First, make sure you go through the MATLAB tutorial (Session 6) carefully to acquire a feel on the probable shapes of root locus plots. Secondly, test guidelines 3 and 4 listed above for every plot that you make in the tutorial. These guidelines can become your most handy tool to deduce, without doing any algebra, whether a system will exhibit underdamped behavior. Or in other words, whether a system will have complex closed-loop poles. 

For each session, we put the most important functions in a table for easy reference or review. The first one is on the basic commands and plotting. Try the commands as you read. To meet the new undergraduate curriculum requirements at SFU, the Department of Chemistry recently altered a required second-year inorganic chemistry laboratory course to provide specific instruction in scientific writing. The weekly 4-h laboratory sessions remain, in the traditional way, the time for students to receive hands on experience with basic inorganic chemistry concepts and laboratory techniques. With the addition of weekly 1-h tutorials, detailed instruction could focus on the various aspects of writing typically associated with a laboratory science. CPAC has responded to the need for micro-analytical measurement devices by focusing much of its present research effort in this direction. The Institute first considered the fundamentals of molecular orbital computations and ab initio methods and the construction of Potential Energy Surfaces. These subjects were further explored in several applications related with optimization of equilibrium geometries and transition structures. The application of fault tree analysis to nuclear criticality control was discussed in an invited paper of that name by one of the present authors at the 1977 Winter Meeting of the American Nuclear Society. The present tutorial session expands this material into a full special session. 

The introduction of weekly case study problems encouraged student engagement with the topics covered and promoted self-learning. As a result the workshop and tutorial sessions provided an enjoyable educational environmental where detailed discussion on the practical application of soil mechanics principles tool place, promoting learning for students, post-grad demonstrators and staff members alike. 

The online resource WRiSE has made a significant difference to the writing and presentation of student reports. The challenge is to get the students to use it. One possibility suggested by the success of the pre-lab work is to include a quiz within the WRiSE module that can count towards the course assessment. Alternatively we could include some of the activities from WRiSE in a tutorial session so that students could work through the language activities and apply them to a draft report. 

This paper is concerned with a major assignment that is integrated within a semester-long introductory course in soil mechanics, which for most students is taken in the second semester of their 2nd year of study. The course covers the topics of definitions and terminology effective stress flow of water, settlement and consolidation and soil strength. The course involves three hours of lectures and a 1 hour tutorial each week for 13 weeks, and five 2 hour laboratory sessions. One of the tutorial sessions is dedicated to assisting students with the Excel spreadsheets. 

Students no longer ask questions during lectures, and make little use of timetabled tutorial sessions.

Four first year undergraduate students of chemistry, while taking a first course on thermodynamics, volunteered to participate in the experiment. They received their tutorial sessions from the researcher, working in two pairs on the experimental assignments. Their discourse was audio taped. The teacher-researcher strived to refrain from giving away steps that students were expected to take themselves. However, he did ask critical questions if he noticed possible inconsistencies in students answers. 

The usability of the system was evaluated by questionnaire to the test users in a five-grade scale, from 1 to five. The average score obtained was 3.2, which means that the participants did not evaluate the system usable. Since the tutorial session for using the system was insufficient, it seems the participants were not accustomed to use the system. 

The course consists of eight workshops and three laboratory sessions. Each workshop has associated with it a specific portion of the book that provides the necessary theoretical background. During the workshop, a specified assignment using the dynamic process simulator will be completed. The results achieved during each workshop, along with an explanation written in Microsoft Word, will be submitted in the form of a diskette at the end of each tutorial session.
