We are confident that any user of this combined evaluation technique, as well as the development of future test standards for manual ultrasonic testing will benefit from this result, because it allows a greater flexibility in the applicable method without loosing reliability. Often an expensive production of a reference block can be avoided and therefore testing costs are reduced. Since all calculations are performed by a PC, the operator can fully concentrate on his most important duty scanning the workpiece and observing the A-scan. Additional time will be saved for the test documentation, since all testing results are stored in the instrument s memory (the PC s hard drive) with full link to the Software World (Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.).

Current computerized analyses of adverse events still typically consist of a vast number of discrete, often personal, ad hoc processes that mimic paper and pencil methods. Some commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) software tools (e.g., Adobe Acrobat , Microsoft Word , Excel ) do have the capability to search for specihc terms in electronic documents/case reports and do have navigational tools with hyperlinks and fullfull-text indexing that enable researchers to create their own hyperlinks. Some other COTS software tools (e.g., SAS , Excel , Access , IMP ) allow importation of electronic case report tabulations (ECRT) for more detailed analysis. 

RTF stands for Rich Text Format, which is Microsoft s open markup language for defining the content of documents. If you have an RTF file, simply clicking on it within a Microsoft Windows environment causes Microsoft Word or WordPad to open the file. There are several ways to create RTF files, and thus Microsoft Word files, with SAS. 

There are many ways to take traditional SAS monospace font output and place it into Microsoft Word RTF files. The traditional way to get SAS output into Microsoft Word is to open a Word file and import the SAS LST output manually. Then you adjust the Word margins and font sizes to get your Word document to cooperate with the PAGESIZE and LINESIZE settings that you had in SAS. Some industrious individuals have written elaborate Visual Basic macros in Microsoft Word to import large numbers of SAS LST files automatically into Word. There are also several SAS users group papers on how to convert traditional SAS output into RTF output. Another approach to getting traditional ASCII SAS output into an RTF file is simply to wrap RTF commands around your ASCII SAS output. Here are the steps you would take to do this ... 

Create a blank Microsoft Word document with the page margins, page orientation, and monospace nonproportional font you want. 

If you are creating RTF files for your SAS output, you should know that you can pass RTF commands to your output and Microsoft Word will interpret them. For instance, if you want to boldface some text, you can simply preface the text with b and suffix the text to be bolded with b0 . The full dictionary of RTF commands and the complete RTF specification can be found on the Microsoft Developer Network at http //msdn.microsoft.com. Several SAS users group papers provide the most common RTF commands that you might want. 

Large PDF files are stable. This cannot be said of Microsoft Word documents, which become unstable when files get large. 

PDF files look the same no matter where you open them. Sometimes Microsoft Word documents can change in appearance depending on your printer or whether you are printing with a PostScript or PCL printer driver. 

There are other ways to convert a single piece of SAS output to PDF. You can use a free script found on the Internet, such as ascii2pdf, or purchase a PDF file converter from a third-party software vendor. If you have Acrobat Distiller with Acrobat Version 5, you can use the PDF distiller macros in Microsoft Office to print a single file from Microsoft Word to PDF. 

There is another easy way to "cheat." On UNIX/Linux workstations, open up a new text editor and enter your frequently used statements there. On Windows, you can use the really nice MATLAB Editor. You can copy-and-paste multiple commands back and forth between the text editor window and the MATLAB window easily. If you want to save the commands, you certainly can add comments and annotations. You can consider this text file as a "free-format notebook" without having to launch the Microsoft Word Notebook for MATLAB. 

Microsoft Word allows you to set everything from paragraph indentation to the look (font style and size) of different types of text.
