Grandia, A.A., Devisser, H., Vanembden, J.D.A., Vanderzee, R., Vanderberg, W.B., Hazenberg, M.P. (1991). Natural antibodies to 65 kD mycobacterial heat shock protein in rats do not correlate with susceptibility for mycobacterium-tuberculosis induced adjuvant arthritis. Immunobiology 182, 127-134. [Pg.454]

Although we have discussed briefly the implications of biochemical individuality for alcoholism, for gout, and for arthritis, these are merely examples. A host of other diseases need to be attacked with the same point of view and hold the same promise of success. These include multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, myasthenia gravis, atherosclerosis, essential hypertension, ulcers, diabetes, epilepsy, rheumatic heart disease, nephrosis, liver cirrhosis, congenital heart disease (as well as a host of other malformations which probably involve nutritional deficiencies during fetal life) and even infective diseases such as tuberculosis or poliomyelitis. [Pg.242]

Chronic tuberculous arthritis is not at all rare in developing countries. Mycobacterial tuberculosis can directly or indirectly affect the musculoskeletal system. Most commonly there is a direct musculoskeletal involvement of M. tuberculosis which may lead to spondylitis, osteomyelitis, septic arthritis and tenosynovitis. M. tuberculosis has become an important pathogen in rheumatic diseases since the use of anti-TNF-a biopharmaceuticals was introduced. [Pg.671]

To eradicate tubercle bacilli longer courses of combinations of tuberculostatics are required in joint tuberculosis compared to treatments of pulmonary tuberculosis. Similar to the therapy of other forms of arthritis, local rest and protection of the joint are required to support recovery. [Pg.671]

C. Pyrazinamide is known to cause hyperuricemia and precipitate gouty arthritis. Pyrazinamide-induced gouty arthritis does not respond to uricosuric therapy with probenecid but may respond to acetylsalicylic acid. Cycloserine (A) can cause headaches, confusion, tremors, and seizures, possibly secondary to low levels of magnesium in the cerebrospinal fluid cycloserine should be avoided in patients with epilepsy and mental depression. It is not associated with hyperuricemia. Thiacetazone (B) is an antibiotic that is rarely used in tuberculosis. The most common adverse reactions are general rashes and GI intolerance. Its use is not associated with hy-... [Pg.565]

Mexico. Decoction of the bark and dried branches is taken orally as an abortive and for diabetes. Decoction of the dried root is taken orally by pregnant humans as an abortive and for diabetes . Infusion of the shade-dried entire plant is taken orally to treat infectious diseases ". Decoction of the dried leaf is taken orally for treatment of diabetes. Hot water extract of the dried leaf is taken orally as a blood purifier to treat kidney problems, urinary tract infections, and frigidity for gallstones, rheumatism and arthritis, diabetes, wounds, and skin injuries, displacement of the womb, and paralysis and to dissolve tumors 5 United States. Hot water extract of the dried leaf is taken orally as a stimulating expectorant and tonic, for tuberculosis, and is drank by Indians of the Southwest for bowel cramps, as a diuretic, and for venereal disease. Hot water extract of the dried leaf is used externally for wound healing . Hot water extract of the dried plant is taken orally for cancer. Effects described are from multicomponent reaction ". [Pg.264]

Rare reactions include hypersensitivity reactions, malignancies, respiratory tract infections, bronchitis, UTls, and more serious infections (such as pneumonia, tuberculosis, cellulitis, pyelonephritis, and septic arthritis). [Pg.19]

Until the role of echinacea in immune modulation is better defined, this agent should be avoided in patients with immune deficiency disorders (eg, AIDS, cancer), autoimmune disorders (eg, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis), and patients with tuberculosis. While there are no reported drug interactions for echinacea, some preparations have a high alcohol content and should not be used with medications known to cause a disulfiram-like reaction. In theory, echinacea should also be avoided in persons taking immunosuppressant medications (eg, organ transplant recipients). [Pg.1356]

Lymphatic tuberculosis, tubercular joint disease, chronic osteomyelitis, rheumatoid arthritis, aseptic suppuration, cancer. [Pg.391]

A 43-year-old woman developed cavitary lung tuberculosis after she received methotrexate and glucocorticoid pulse therapy for rheumatoid arthritis (321). [Pg.38]

Chaparral has been used in the treatment of arthritis, cancer, venereal disease, tuberculosis, bowel cramps, rheumatism, and colds. [Pg.90]

More serious conditions for which people take herbal drugs include depression, irregular heartbeat and other heart problems, arthritis, arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), asthma, high blood pressure, various cancers, diabetes, epilepsy, gallstones, sexually transmitted diseases, hepatitis, jaundice, malaria, measles, obesity, tetanus, tuberculosis, and ulcers. [Pg.229]
