Lobaria pulmonaria (L.) Hoffm. var. meridonalis (Vain) Zahlbr. is a widespread lichen characterized by a lobed structure similar in appearance to alveolar tissue. As Gonzalez et al. (1994) pointed out in their introduction to a discussion of the chemistry of this lichen, its specific epithet reflects its use as a treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis following the Doctrine of Signatures. The varietal name was appended much later to specimens collected in the Philippines. [Pg.223]

In an extensive study undertaken in Nigeria of several patients suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis diagnosed by means of the radiological features of tuberculous bronchopneumonia on chest X-ray and detection of acid-fast bacilli in the patients sputum by simple microscopy, serum immunoglobulin measurements were made (M27). The wide age distribution of the patients and controls are summarized in Table 12, and the immunoglobulin concentration results in Tables 13 and 14. The tuber-... [Pg.197]

CDC recommendations Rifapentine may be used once weekly with isoniazid in the continuation phase of treatment for HIV-seronegative patients with noncavitary, drug-susceptible pulmonary tuberculosis who have negative sputum smears at completion of the initial phase of treatment. Continue this regimen for 4 months (total of 6 months of TB treatment). Have treatment for patients receiving isoniazid and rifapentine, and whose 2-month cultures are positive, extended by an additional 3 months (total of 9 months). [Pg.1732]

To eradicate tubercle bacilli longer courses of combinations of tuberculostatics are required in joint tuberculosis compared to treatments of pulmonary tuberculosis. Similar to the therapy of other forms of arthritis, local rest and protection of the joint are required to support recovery. [Pg.671]

A 32-year-old Haitian man has acute-onset confusion and suicidal ideation. Two weeks ago he began combination therapy for multi-drug resistant pulmonary tuberculosis. Invertebrate animals such as corals, jellyfish, and sea anemones are belonging to phylum Cnidaria. Corals are used as an ingredient in traditional medicine for treating various diseases such as pulmonary tuberculosis, asthma, chronic bronchitis, urinary diseases, and cancer (Gopal et ah, 2008). Corals contain mostly Ca and minor amounts of Mg, Fe, and P. Calcined corals or calcium extracted from marine corals have shown effective as therapeutic agent for controlling cancer, diabetes, and many other deadly diseases. Corals with high species diversity in the tropical oceans are often rich in bioactive molecules and preferential... [Pg.157]

A 62-year-old man with recurrent non-Hodgkin s lymphoma developed pulmonary tuberculosis, for which he received rifampicin. Within 2 weeks, his thyrotropin (TSH) concentration increased to 170 mU/1 and the serum concentrations of thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) fell to 24 pg/l and 180 ng/1 respectively. He was given thyroxine. After the course of rifampicin therapy had been completed, thyroxine was withdrawn and he remained euthyroid for 4 years. [Pg.643]
