A comparative evaluation of haemodialysis tubing plasticized with di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate and with tri-2-ethylhexyl trimellitate was made in 11 patients (10 men, one woman) with chronic renal failure on haemodialysis for a period of six months. During treatment with tubing containing di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, the plasma level of di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate rose from 0.10 mg/L (range, < 0.05-0.17) to 0.70 mg/L (range, 0.30-1.6) (detection limit, 0.05 mg/L) (Christensson etal., 1991).

Two-site immunometric or sandwich assays that made use of two or more antibodies directed at different parts of the PRL molecule were next to be developed. Because of its sensitivity, the technique is very responsive to contamination and high background interference. A lot of inflammable materials, for instance paper, empty cartons, soiled tissue-papers, cloth pieces that may have been used to clean up inflammable liquids, used pieces of sponge, urethane-foam used as packing materials, used filter papers, empty card-board boxes, discarded rubber-tubings, plastic bags, cotton etc., must be stored into a separate bin.

In the most widely used solid-phase methods no centrifugation step is required. The commercially available kits for steroids contain the antibody (or the second antibody, in the double-antibody technique) immobilized on the walls of a tube, plastic beads, sticks, or membranes.

Blood sample collection is potentially a major source of contamination. Phthalate plasticizers have been under attack by environmentalist groups in the wake of a U.K. report by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, which found traces of the material in baby formula imlk, coupled with concerns about reproductive (estrogenic) effects. It was speculated that flexible PVC tubing plasticized with phthalates may have been responsible for the baby formula contamination, but the source remained obscure. ...
