Acidifying the sample causes colloids and fine sediments that passed through the filter to gradually dissolve, yielding abnormally high concentrations of elements such as aluminum, iron, silicon, and titanium when the fluid is analyzed. The soil samples are air dried. Transfer 50g into a 500ml flat-bottomed flask and extracted with methanol. Remove the methanol by using a rotary evaporator with a water bath at 55°C. Cool the flask and add 5.0ml of methanol, swirl to dissolve the residue and filter the solution through a Whatman No. 42 filter-paper. Using a flow-rate of 0.6ml min-1, inject 5pl of extract into the liquid chromatograph. Another problem encountered was the impurity content of the filter paper used in the high volume samplers to collect the particulate samples. The conventional filter material used by EPA was glass fiber filter media. However, this was not compatible with INAA because of its high and varied impurity content. Discussions with K. Rahn of the Ford Reactor at the University of Michigan revealed that Whatman-41 filter paper was the most desirable medium for use with INAA (see Ref. 2). Our analyses showed Whatman-41 to be very low in impurities with consistent impurity levels from batch to batch. Average impurity levels, based on 12 batch analyses, are shown in Table III. Although the levels for calcium, chlorine, sodium, aluminum, and iron appear large, they rarely affected elemental levels found in filtered particulates. In a mortar, grind two Extra Strength Excedrin tablets to a very fine powder. The label states that this analgesic contains 250 mg of aspirin, 250 mg of acetaminophen, and 65 mg of caffeine per tablet. Place this powder in a test tube and add to it 7.5 mL of dichloromethane.
