Prewar (1938) German production of F-T fuel was around 660 kt/a a trial plant built in Brownsville Texas in the 1950s produced 360 kt/a, and Sasol production in South Africa is currently (2005) around 7 Mt/a. Shell has a plant in Malaysia with a capacity of 500 kt/a to make waxes (long chain alkanes) by F-T from syngas using a hydrogenating Co catalyst.

Besides experiments and trial plants, simulation using computer programs furnishes the process development engineer vith a very effective tool [Zeitz 1987, Schuler 1995, Messer 1998, Seider 1999]. If the absorber can be simulated with the available material data in a calculation run in parallel, work on this step will be complete. The best of the prospective table grape selections from the 1977-1980 series are the following. These potential sampling problems must be solved in advance of the unit test. The conclusions drawn from any unit test are strongly affected by the accuracy of the sampling methods and the resultant analyses. Methods should be discussed and practiced before the actual unit test. Analysts should use the trial measurements in prehm-inary plant-performance analysis to ensure that the results will be use-bil during the actual unit test. 

The optimization of reactions involving a large number of variables, and in tire case of metal production diese might include die temperature, gas, slag and metal compositions, die state of motion of each phase, and die leiigdi of die refining period, could be analysed by die classical, so-called Newtonian mediod in which one variable is altered in a given series of tests while all odier variables are held constant, and die results are collected in order to assess die dependence of die productivity on diat variable. If utilities are supplied to the new project from some other source, the cost and amount must be determined. If purchased from a second party, the cost will be determined by contract and can be estimated by discussions with the vendor. If utilities are transferred from an affiliated source, the cost must include a profit to the supplying entity. Some estimators use a lower return on utility plants than on a new hydrocarbon processing unit, since the utility can be used for some alternate plant if the new one shuts down for any reason. However, the preferred analysis allows a high enough utility transfer price to provide the same return on the utilities as the new unit being studied. This can require a trial and error approach, especially if the utilities are a significant part of the selling price of the product.

One can to outline a general approach for medium selection along with a test sequence applicable to a large group of filter media of the same type. There are three methods of filter media tests laboratory- or bench-scale pilot-unit, and plant tests. The laboratory-scale test is especially rapid and economical, but the results obtained are often not entirely reliable and should only be considered preliminary. Pilot-unit tests provide results that approach plant data. The most reliable results are often obtained from plant trials.
