Trading activity

Although China has officially banned e-waste importation, such ban in some cases has resulted in underground illegal e-waste trading activities. In fact, e-waste problems are not limited to China alone other developing countries such as India, Cambodia, Indonesia, Pakistan, Thailand, and Nigeria also have to deal with similar issues [2, 5]. [Pg.281]

It was noted that PCBs might also be present in minute quantities in some consumer products such as small old electrical appliances/parts, electronics, impact papers, adhesives, sealants, plastic materials and paints. The 2003 Hong Kong Census and Statistic figures showed local trading activities of these consumer products. However, in the absence of information on the product content of PCBs, no estimate of total PCBs in semi-closed and open application could be made. The relative contribution from this category to total PCB use was likely to be insignificant. [Pg.319]

In the first case, governments can devolve trading activity to the level of companies in order to enhance carbon market efficiency, and trade only on behalf of sectors not covered by domestic emissions trading schemes ([Ql]Hahn and Stavins, 1999). In fact, this is the approach currently adopted by the European Union, where EU ETS allowances (EUAs) traded across national country borders correspond to Kyoto units (AAUs). Another design option relates to whether companies may or may not be allowed to trade with governments. According to economic theory this would be the most efficient option. ... [Pg.10]

Stock lending is not a sale and repurchase in the conventional sense but is used by banks and securities houses to cover short positions in securities put on as part of market-making or proprietary trading activity. In some markets (for example, the Japanese equity market) regulations require a counterparty to have arranged stock lending before putting on the short trade. [Pg.325]

These tests are calculated on a regular basis as well as each time the composition of the portfolio is altered, that is, each time assets are sold, purchased, or paid off ahead of their legal maturity date. If the test results fall below the required minimum, trading activity is restricted to only those trades that will improve the test results. Certain other compliance tests are viewed as more critical in terms of maintaining note repayment integrity therefore, if any of them are failed, the cash flows will be diverted from the normal priority of payments and begin sequentially paying off the notes based on seniority until the test results improve. These include ... [Pg.482]

An investor should be able to replicate the index and its performance with a small number of instruments as well as with relatively low transaction costs and without moving the market too much. For this reason the index constituents should be a set of bonds that have standard features, are liquid, and trade actively in the secondary market. The ability to invest in the index through derivative instruments such as futures and total return swaps is an added attraction of an index. [Pg.805]

By application, about 84% of solvent emissions are from industrial solvent use, the remainder from domestic and trade activities. [Pg.112]

Recycled plastics are used in a variety of applications, including automobiles, housewares, packaging, and construction. More information about uses is found in the sections on recycling of individual types of plastics. Recycled materials, including plastics, also are an important segment of world trade activities. For example, in 1995, recycled plastic exports from the United States alone amounted to 652.8 million lb, for a value of about 205 million. Most of these exports went to Hong Kong, and much of that material probably went on to China. The Far East is also an important market for other countries. [Pg.1003]

Assets are classified as current assets and fixed assets. The essential difference between the two is that fixed assets contribute to the company s productive capacity while current assets are items which are bought and sold in the course of its day-to-day trading activities. The fixed assets are further subdivided into investments (e.g. shares in other companies), tangible assets (assets which have some physical existence) and intangible assets (assets such as copyrights in literary works, which have no physical existence). [Pg.75]

Measured by the volume of LME turnover (see Table 16.1), the market in aluminium is currently the largest, followed by copper, and then zinc. In tonnage terms, lead is now a rather poor fourth, while measured by the number of lots traded, it falls behind nickel as well. Volume statistics such as those in Table 16.1 measure trading activity in terms of the number of futures (or options) contracts that are either bought or sold over a given period (in this case a year). [Pg.187]

Stock prices started to drop as shareholders demanded good old-fashioned profits—which the majority of technology and Internet-related startups clearly could not deliver. Even the bellwether technology and communications companies had trouble showing positive results, as they had overspent and witnessed a mass exodus of both corporate and individual customers. Trading activity—as high as 82.3 million trades in the first quarter of 2000, according to now-defunct Internet indus-... [Pg.16]

Below is an excerpt from the first few pages of the Scient report that provides an interesting overview of the electronic transaction systems available at the time. The rest of the report gives in exhaustive detail each e-bond provider s current and proposed offering, system type, availability, funding information, trading activity, revenue strategy, and customers. From this excerpt, however, note the number of e-bond companies in the industry just two years ago—most of whom you will not likely see in the future. [Pg.29]
