Silica. The main uses of siUca are in the treads of off-the-road tines for improved chunking and tear resistance and as a component of the bonding system for brass and 2inc-plated steel cord. These are commonly used in radial passenger and tmck tire belt skim stock. In addition the body pHes of steel radial tmck tires, hoses and belts, and footwear use significant volumes of siUca as a reinforcing filler. [Pg.245]

Processings and Properties. Polybutadiene is compounded similarly to SBR and vulcanised with sulfur. The high cis-1,4 type crystallizes poorly on stretching so it is not suitable as a "gum" stock but requires carbon black reinforcement. It is generally used for automotive tires in mixtures with SBR and natural mbber. Its low T (—OS " C) makes it an excellent choice for low temperature tire traction, and also leads to a high resilience (better than natural mbber) which ia turn results ia a lower heat build-up. Furthermore, the high i j -polybutadiene also has a high abrasion resistance, a plus for better tire tread wear. [Pg.469]

Internal reflux is induced by means of externally cooled liquid pumparounds. A pumparound simply removes hot liquid from the tower, pumps it through a heat exchanger and then introduces this cooled liquid into the tower a few trays above. Use of pumparounds allows a better distribution of tower loadings than if all the heat were removed from the VPS using an overhead condenser. Four to six trays between sidestreams and two pumparounds are normally specified for a lube VPS. The three liquid sidestream products to be used as lube plant feed stocks are steam stripped to remove lighter boiling components which condense with tire sidestreams. [Pg.231]

The rubber stock, once compounded and mixed, must be molded or transformed into the form of one of the final parts of the tire. This consists of several parallel processes by which the sheeted rubber and other raw materials, such as cord and fabric, are made into the following basic tire components tire beads, tire treads, tire cords, and the tire belts (fabric). Tire beads are coated wires inserted in the pneumatic tire at the point where the tire meets the wheel rim (on which it is mounted) they ensure a seal between the rim and the tire. The tire treads are the part of the tire that meets the road surface their design and composition depend on the use of the tire. Tire cords are woven synthetic fabrics (rayon, nylon, polyester) impregnated with rubber they are the body of the tire and supply it with most of its strength. Tire belts stabilize the tires and prevent the lateral scrubbing or wiping action that causes tread wear. [Pg.548]

The processes used to produce the individual tire components usually involve similar steps. First, the raw stock is heated and subjected to a final mixing stage before going to a roller mill. The material is then peeled off rollers and continuously extruded into the final component shape. Tire beads are directly extruded onto the reinforcing wire used for the seal, and tire belt is produced by calendering rubber sheet onto the belt fabric. [Pg.548]

Nylon finally became available to the general public in May 1940. Ten years had passed from initial discovery to full commercialization. It was a tremendous effort, even for a company with the resources of DuPont, and the R D cost was 4.3 million. During World War II, DuPont nylon production went up to 25 million pounds a year, and was used to make parachutes, airplane tire cords, and glider tow ropes. DuPont resumed selling nylon for stockings after the war. [Pg.38]

They are also consumed extensively in making rubber cements (adhesives) or are employed in the fabrication of rubberized cloth, hot-water bottles, bathing caps, gloves, overshoes, and toys. The compounded rubber stock will be further processed for use. The process could be injection or transfer molding into a hot mold where it is cured. Tire curing bladders are made in this fashion. Extrusion of the rubber stock is used to make hose or tire treads and sidewalls. Another common process is calendaring, in which a fabric is passed through rolls where rubber is squeezed into the fabric to make fabric-reinforced rubber sheets for roofing membranes or body plies for tires.
