Growth mechanism of a (9n,0) tubule, over 24n coordination sites of the catalyst. The growth of a general (9 ,0) tubule on the catalyst surface is illustrated by that of the (9,0) tubule in Fig. 16 which shows the unsaturated end of a (9,0) tubule in a planar representation. At that end, the carbons bearing a vacant bond are coordinatively bonded to the catalyst (grey circles) or to a growing cis-polyacetylene chain (oblique bold lines in Fig. 16). Tlie vacant bonds of the six c/s-polyacetylene chains involved are taken to be coordinatively bonded to the catalyst [Fig. 16(b)]. These polyacetylene chains are continuously extruded from the catalyst particle where they are formed by polymerization of C2 units assisted by the catalyst coordination sites. Note that in order to reduce the number of representations of important steps, Fig. 16(b) includes nine new Cj units with respect to Fig. 16(a). [Pg.99]

The processes used to produce the individual tire components usually involve similar steps. First, the raw stock is heated and subjected to a final mixing stage before going to a roller mill. Japan Synthetic Paper has developed a PP foaming process. The non-crosslinked PP is continuously extruded to produce foamed sheeting and the sheet is further vacuum moulded by the conventional process. The poly(vinylidene chloride-cu-vinylchloride) may be injection molded and extruded. Extruded pipe and molded fittings which were produced in large quantity in the 1940s have been replaced to some extent by less expensive thermoplastics. In the continuous extrusion design process, the parison is continuously extruded between the open mold halves from an accumulator head. When the required length of parison has been produced, the mold is closed, trapping the parison that is severed usually by a hot knife from the die. Figure 6.7 provides a simplified schematic of a continuous BM process. Land or pinch-off areas on the mold compress and seal the upper and lower ends of the parison to make an elastic airtight part. Compressed air is introduced through the blow pin into the interior of the sealed parison that expands to take up the shape of the mold cavities. For case 3, pieces of Al-foil were cut from a roll of fabricated material as shown in Fig. 1(a). The laminate in case 3 was then prepared in a Haake film extruder with a 36 pm Polyester (PET) as carrier (see Fig. 1(b)). The foil was mounted on the PET carrier while LDPE was extruded and coated on Al-foil at a melting temperature of 278 °C. A nip with the pressure 202 bar was used to press the layers together. The laminated specimen for case 3 was than cut from roll including PET/Al-foil/LDPE as shown in Fig.l(c). After producing the material for case 3, LDPE was continuously extruded on the PET carrier under the same conditions but without the Al-foil. By peeling off the PET carrier, the LDPE produced here was used for making the specimen for case 2 and case 4. And the specimen of case 1 is taken from the Al-foil roll of the same direction as the other cases. [Pg.356]

Small commercial continuous extruders require a minimum of 100-1000 g of material for a typical experiment. Such extruder reactions may not be convenient for running a large matrix of screening experiments to optimize processing conditions, especially when limited amounts of valuable starting materials are involved. Most commercial REX processes are simple one-step chemical reactions between inexpensive and readily available starting materials. REX is particularly suited for just-in-time inventory control of a commercial polymer product because the total time involved in reaction and product finishing is often much shorter than in conventional continuous processes. [Pg.2538]

This grafting reaction was extrapolated to continuous-extruding systems but it was necessary to increase residence-time and mixing efficiency in order to obtain the optimal level of grafting (24). This study confirmed that interpolymeric condensation reactions are effective in the melt, but final reactivity is a function of composition and reciprocal miscibility of the two polymeric species. Multifilament cloths are constmcted of a bundle of fibers twisted together. Only synthetic materials are available in this form, since long continuously extruded fibers must be used. Spun fabrics are composed of short sections of bound fibers of varying length. Retention of small particles is increased as the number of fibers or filaments in a bundle increases. The greater the amount of twist in the yam, the more tightly packed the fabric, which contributes to retention. There are a number of machines that do not utilize Archimedean screw for transport of the material, but still fall within the category of continuous extruders. Sometimes these machines are referred to as screwless extruders or elastic melt extruder. These machines employ disks or drums to melt, mix, pump, and extrude the material and are based on viscous drag transport principle.
