Resins extrusion

Extrusion Resins. Extmsion of VDC—VC copolymers is the main fabrication technique for filaments, films, rods, and tubing or pipe, and involves the same concerns for thermal degradation, streamlined flow, and noncatalytic materials of constmction as described for injection-molding resins (84,122). The plastic leaves the extmsion die in a completely amorphous condition and is maintained in this state by quenching in a water bath to about 10°C, thereby inhibiting recrystallization. In this state, the plastic is soft, weak, and pHable. If it is allowed to remain at room temperature, it hardens gradually and recrystallizes partially at a slow rate with a random crystal arrangement. Heat treatment can be used to recrystallize at controlled rates. [Pg.441]

Some of the main uses [33,34] of polyamides or nylons are for synthetic fibers for the tire, carpet, stocking, and upholstery industries. Use of polyamides as molding and extrusion resins for the plastics industry is also of increasing importance [38]. [Pg.47]

The engineering applications of PET resins include blow-molded bottles, films, molding, and extrusion. Resins made for the latter two uses and related purposes are called molding resins in this article. The huge volumes of PET resin used for textile filaments and industrial fibers, eg, tire cord, are not included here. The PBT resins are mainly used for molding and related applications. [Pg.268]

Polyamides. In 1988, 77% of U S. demand for adipic acid was for nylon-6,6 fiber, while 11% was used in nyon-6,6 resins (195). In Western Europe only about 66% was for polyamide, because of the stronger competition from nylon-6. The fiber applications include carpets (67%), apparel (13%), tire cord (7%), and miscellaneous (13%). Nylon-6,6 resins were distributed between injection molding (85%) for such applications as automotive and electrical parts and for extrusion resins (15%) for strapping, film, and wire and cable. [Pg.247]

Minerals were used in the range of 30 to 60 percent by weight. The most useful minerals were ground quartz (SIO2), Wollastonlte (CaSiOs) and calcined clay. Although the silica is very abrasive and could not be tolerated in an injection molding or extrusion resin, the slurries in the low viscosity caprolactam were pumped and cast without excessive abrasion. Calcined clay is much less abrasive than silica and is preferred if the mineral reinforced polymer Is to be post-processed by injection molding. [Pg.140]

Hydrolyzed ethylene—vinyl acetate copolymers [24937-78-8]> commonly known as ethylene—vinyl alcohol (EVOH) copolymers [25067-34-9], are usually used as extrusion resins, although some may be used in solvent-coating applications. As the ethylene fraction of these semicrystalline copolymers increases, the melting temperature decreases, the permeabilities increase, and the sensitivity to humidity decreases. The permeabilities as a function of polymer composition and humidity are shown in Figure 2. Vinyl alcohol homopolymer [9002-89-5] has a very low oxygen permeability in dry conditions however, the polymer is water-soluble. Trade names for these barrier polymers include Eval, Soamol, Selar OH, and Qarene. Table 6 lists the compositions... [Pg.489]

During extrusion, resin particles are fed from the hopper, through the feed throat of the extruder, and into the extruder barrel. The resin falls onto the rotating screw and is packed in the first section or feed zone of the screw. The packed particles are melted as they travel through the middle section (transition or compression zone) of the screw, and the melt is mixed in the final section or metering zone. Pressure generated in the extruder forces the molten polymer through the die. [Pg.329]
