Getting feedback from a spouse or a close friend on your draft mission statement is useful, and posting the mission statement with that person helps create external pressure for you to live up to your intentions. As you review your values statement and goals, you should review your mission statement to make sure that it remains a valid snapshot of where you believe you need to go. 

The mission is the purpose of the company. The mission statement defines what the company does or is. It is a statement of the present going ahead into the near future. It is a document written to create a sense of purpose for customers and employees. The mission statement should be short—usually no more than two sentences. It focuses on the common purpose of the organization and may draw from the values or beliefs held by the organization. The mission statement should help to differentiate the company from others that provide the same products or services. Some organizations include in the mission statement not only what the company does but also how it does it— essentially the differentiating point. 

As noted earlier, the mission statement creates a sense of purpose for both the employees and customers of the organization. Employees of Kerr Drug know that their customers will expect reliable and comprehensive services and therefore that they should strive to provide that each day. This chapter later discusses how pharmacies such as Kerr Drug that have well-defined missions and that engage in strategic planning are more likely to be successful. 

It is important to recognize that mission statements and strategic plans vary among types of organizations, especially within health care. The mission statement and strategic plan of a not-for-profit children s research hospital likely will be different from that of a for-profit pharmacy chain (Table 24-1). The aspects of a professional service that will need to be emphasized in a business plan will vary as well. The not-for-profit children s research hospital may want to see how a new professional service will result in enhanced clinical outcomes or benefit the greatest number of children at the lowest possible cost. Practice standards. Practice standards are needed to ensure consistent, comprehensive pharmacy services for each patient. According to the mission statement, the goal is for each patient to be free of drug-related problems. And drug products must be procured, prepared, and distributed cost-effectively, efficiently, and safely. The standards must be designed so that the pharmacist is reasonably able to maintain them. Career advancement opportunities should be made available within clinical practice and not be confined to a managerial track. Career ladders should be constructed to institutionalize and formalize department expectations for the development of clinical practice skills. 

Then one last comment about the previous comment by Suzanne Franks. The women faculty at North Carolina State have struggled with this issue of putting the word feminist in the mission statement. We could probably stay here and talk all day about this. The women scientists, myself included, were saying no, because we are going to do this anyway. Maybe it could be in a statement about what we re trying to do, but we shouldn t have it in the mission statement, because it might scare off women. 

Emphasizes pharmaceutical care, as considered in the professional literature and as presented in the Position Paper of the AACP Commission to Implement Change in Pharmaceutical Education, as a part of the mission statement of a college or school of pharmacy, and as an organizing principle for curricular development.

It is relatively easy to write and publish a mission statement—it is much more difficult to maintain a commitment to the mission statement s values, week after week, month after month, year after year.
