Good intentions

Since the resources for data collection systems will be provided by senior management it is essential that information from the system is fed back to policy makers at this level. It is also important that the system indicates the problem areas as well as the successes. Many organizations have drifted to a state where safety standards have fallen to below acceptable levels over time as a result of suppression of information feedback to senior managers. This may be carried out with good intentions, but its long-term effect can be disastrous. [Pg.291]

Stiefel pp. 1-101 2. A theosophick epistle, or letter, wherein the life of a true Christian is described what a Christian is and how he cometh to be a Christian. Together with a description, what a titular Christian is. What the faith and life of both of them is. Written to a good friend of his in Christian, brotherlike and memberlike admonition, and a good intention, by Jacob Behmen. London, printed by John Macock, 1653. pp. 103-158... [Pg.598]

As can be seen, the real cause of most accidents is what might be classified as human errors. Most people have good intentions to perform a function properly, but where shortcuts, easier methods or considerable economic gain opportunities appear or present themselves, human vulnerability usually succumbs to the temptation. Therefore it is prudent in any organization, especially where high risk facilities are operated, to have a system in place to conduct considerable independent checks, inspections, and safety audits of the design and construction of the installation. [Pg.2]

There is, as always, a need for good quality data. Most of this is now available in electronic form and Chapter 11 lists some of the databases available. In spite of proclaimed good intentions, there is little systematic documentation of the successful application of plastics and their lifetimes, only examples of unexpected failure. There is a need for medium-term, lightly accelerated tests under intermediate conditions to validate the predictive models. While inspection of components at end-of-life is more prevalent than expected, there is a need for coupling it to predictive techniques to validate these techniques and to close the loop of life prediction. [Pg.179]

You are the best judge of your study habits. You should make a realistic decision about what will work best for you. Good intentions and wishes will not prepare you for the exam. Decide what works best for you. Do not feel that you must follow one of these schedules exactly you can fine-tune any one of them to your own needs. Do not make the mistake of forcing yourself to follow someone else s method. Look at the following descriptions, and see which best describes you. This will help you pick a prep mode. [Pg.9]

A considerable amount of literature exists on mixing mechanisms, processes, and devices. Most of the devices developed utilize fundamental principles to provide mixing to a polymer system. Some devices, however, have been placed on the market with good intention but provide lower mixing performances. The number of devices on the market is considerably more than what could be covered here. Instead only the most-used devices and their performances will be covered in this chapter. The reader is directed to other sources for detailed mixing mechanisms, devices, and applications [1, 2]. [Pg.329]

To Sue, Lauren, and Emily Beebe, to Karen Pell, and to Jon Zieman— the families of tbe authors—who gave up many hours of companionship during the preparation of this book. Without their support and encouragement, this manuscript would have gone the way of so many other good intentions. [Pg.180]

However, although these aspects are discussed as separate topics below, in line with the way scientific studies and regulatory issues are normally defined, most consumers still see them as parts of a holistic picture where the good intentions of the people involved in the food supply chain are the most important assurance for all aspects of food quality. In this context, stringent safety measures and sophisticated process control, which are the cornerstone of food quality assurance schemes in conventional supply chains, maybe seen by consumers at best as self-imposed restrictions that prove the sincerity of these good intentions, and at worst as unfair, unnecessary burdens introduced through lobbying from big profit business to support its suppression of small-scale or local producers. [Pg.310]

Studies of the behavior of animals - rats and pigeons - show that they discount the future in the way represented by diagram B. There is evidence, although less conclusive, that human beings behave in the same way. To the extent that they do, they have a problem. Good intentions lose their power to motivate as... [Pg.55]

Caroll, Robert T xld. Substance Abuse Treatment. The Skeptic s Dictionary. Available online. URL http //skepdic.com/sat.html. Updated on November 11, 2003. This contrarian approach to substance abuse treatment acknowledges the good intentions of pioneers such as Charles Dederich of Synanon but argues that a number of programs violate human rights. The author questions the role and self-interest of professional interventionists who try to get substance abusers into treatment. He also argues that there is an inherent contradiction between the disease model of substance abuse and the moral approach of 12-step organizations such as Alcoholics Anonymous. [Pg.163]

The fundamental concept of chemical kinetics is that of reaction mechanism. In the broad sense, the word mechanism ("detailed , "intimate ) is the comprehensive interpretation of all experimental data accumulated on the complex reaction process. In this mechanism, one should discriminate individual stages and reaction steps, give characteristics for intermediates, describe transition states of individual steps, provide energy levels of substances, etc. As far as catalytic reactions are concerned, one should characterize surface properties, examine the adsorption character, etc. "I want to know everything about a complex chemical reaction this is the way one must understand chemists when they speak about their intention to investigate a detailed mechanism. Whether it is possible to realize such good intentions at a modern theoretical and experimental level will be another question. [Pg.51]

The first series of modifications featured in this chapter were all motivated by Good Intentions. In spite of creative ideas and considerable effort, these modifications failed because no one took the time to examine and expose their weaknesses. These undetected weaknesses caused undesired side effects. [Pg.23]

There were good intentions when a small chemical terminal in Savannah, Georgia, that supplied the paper and pulp industry decided to change their product mix. Their terminal was to be converted from handling all nonflammable chemicals to storing large quantities of flammable crude sulfate turpentine (CST). Crude sulfate turpentine is an impure form of turpentine produced as a byproduct of the Kraft pulping process. It is classified as a Class IC flammable liquid. [Pg.49]
