Ductile—brittle temperature

The solubility of carbon in tungsten is 0.05 at.% (32 pig/g) at 1600°C and 1 at.% (650 ptg/g) at 3000°C. The mechanical properties are influenced in a similar way as for molybdenum. The yield point increases up to 0.05 at.% (32 Aig/g) of carbon. The transition temperature ductile/ brittle of tungsten polycrystals containing carbon increases much more than the one of tungsten monocrystals. For polycrystals, about 0.1 at.% (65 /ig/g) of carbon causes an increase to approx. 400°C, for monocrystals only to nearly 100°C (1). When producing tungsten wires for electric bulbs, carbon has an essential effect due to an increasing tendency for ruptures. [Pg.17]

With the precipitation hardening types, high strengths can be obtained with good toughness. A feature of these steels is that the ductile-brittle transition is less sharp, although low impact values are obtained at very low temperatures. Yielding and fracture are two very important properties of materials, particularly for thermosets. Both aspects can be associated by considering the ductile-brittle transition temperature, TB (Fig. 12.5). [Pg.367]

At higher temperatures, the failure occurs with yielding, which is now the predominant deformation mechanism. From an experimental point of view, domains define what is called the ductile-brittle transition temperature, TB, which is a very important characteristic for polymers. The ductile-brittle transition is also associated with a stiffness-toughness balance. The hexagonal close-packed (hep) metals exhibit mechanical properties intermediate between those of the fee and bcc metals. For example, zinc suffers a ductile-to-brittle transition, whereas zirconium and pure titanium do not. The latter and its alloys have an hep structure, remain reasonably ductile at low temperatures, and have been used for many applications where weight reduction and reduced heat leakage through the material have been important. However, small impurities of oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, and carbon can have a detrimental effect on the low-temperature ductility properties of titanium and its alloys. [Pg.174]
