Figure 4. The following data were used leak radius r0 (40 micron), leak conductance F = 1 cc. sec.-1, gas pressure (air) p (20 torr), diffusion coefficient (26) for ions Di — 2 sq. cm. sec.-"1, for electrons De = 2000 sq. cm. sec.-1 (at 20 torr air). Strichart- Those are the densitites of peak currents in response to voltage pulses, as opposed to currents that are activated and contribute to the regenerative current that is important in the rising phase of the action potential. The relative contributions can depend a lot on the slope and the actual rate of the rise. In this regard, the role of K channels becomes increasingly critical you can have a shunting outward current or leak conductance that are almost equivalent. [Pg.58]

Ion conducting solid polymer electrolytes, such as those used in battery and fuel cell membranes, have been explored for use in supercapacitors [153,159,200,201]. While these electrolytes are environmentally benign and do not leak, conductivities are typically much lower than liquid or gel electrolyte systems, especially at subambient temperatures (important for military and space applications). Nevertheless, capacitance in supercapacitors prepared with solid polymer electrolytes has been reported to be as good as or better than the same devices constructed using liquid electrolytes. Nafion [200], polyethylene oxide [153], and polyvinyl alcohol [153] are the polymers of choice for this application. [Pg.1409]

Fire-Resistant Hydraulic Fluids. Fire-resistant hydrauhc fluids are used where the fluid could spray or drip from a break or leak onto a source of ignition, eg, a pot of molten metal or a gas flame (17). Conditions such as these exist in die-casting machines or in presses located near furnaces. Specific tests for fire resistance are conducted by Factory Mutual in the United States. [Pg.271]

Thermal degradation of isocyanates occurs on heating above 100—120°C. This reaction is exothermic, and a mnaway reaction can occur at temperatures >175° C. In view of the heat sensitivity of isocyanates, it is necessary to melt MDl with caution and to foUow suppHers recommendation. Disposal of empty containers, isocyanate waste materials, and decontamination of spilled isocyanates are best conducted using water or alcohols containing small amounts of ammonia or detergent. Eor example, a mixture of 50% ethanol, 2-propanol, or butanol 45% water, and 5% ammonia can be used to neutrali2e isocyanate waste and spills. Spills and leaks of isocyanates should be contained immediately, ie, by dyking with an absorbent material, such as saw dust. [Pg.353]

Low resistivity can sometimes be a problem, if the resistivity is below lO" n-cm, the collected particles are so conductive that their charges leak to ground faster than they are replenished bv the corona. The particles are no longer electrostatically pinned to the plate, and... [Pg.1613]

Gaskets are veiy important, since thev not only keep the streams separated and prevent leaks from the cell, they have the manifolds to conduct feeds. Doth concentrate and diluate, built into them. No other practical means of feeding the stack is used in the veiy cramped space required by the need to keep cells thin because the diluate has veiy low conductivity. The manifolds are formed by ahgning holes in membrane and gasket. [Pg.2031]

When the seal maximum pressure is such that the gas test must be conducted well below rated discharge pressure, then another test, or substituted test, may be invoked in which the seals are removed. It may require removing the rotor however, with this procedure the joint makeup still remains a problem when the rotor is replaced. However, without the seals, the test described earlier is performed, using the rated discharge pressure rather than the maximum seal pressure. The acceptance test is the same also no leaks should be detected. The latter test should help to still controversy about minor joint leaks on a hydrostatic test, if the casing is proven at rated pressure on gas. [Pg.414]
