Therefore, it is important to know not only the level of expertise of the specialist who is supporting you, but also whether they are local to you or located in the manufacturer s corporate headquarters. In other words, can the vendor give technical help whenever you need it Another important aspect related to application support is the availability of application literature. Is there a wide selection of material available for you to read, either in the form of Web-based application reports or references in the open literature, to help you develop your methods Also, find out if there are active user or Internet-based discnssion groups, because they will be an invaluable source of technical and application help. One such source of help in this area can be found on the PlasmaChem Listserver, a plasma spectrochemistry discussion group out of Syracuse University.

This book grew out of a collection of technical-support web pages. Those pages were also posted to the computational chemistry list server maintained by the Ohio Supercomputer Center. ISO 9000. The ISO 9000 series of standards was first issued in 1987 and then updated in 1994. The ISO 9000 standard describes the selection criteria for the four standards, ISO 9001—9004. ISO 9001 is composed of 20 items covering manufactured products from design and development in R D to commercial production and after-sale service or technical support. ISO 9002 has 19 of the items in 9001 describing the requirements of a quahty system for the manufacture of an item, such as chemicals, to a specification only the requirement relating to product development is omitted. Chemical companies seldom certify to ISO 9003, which describes the quahty system for a laboratory involved in final inspection and test. Finally, ISO 9004 presents guidelines for total quahty management.

Operators Operators develop mythologies in response to the pressure placed upon them for successful produc tion quahty and rates. These help them make decisions that, while not always technically supported, are generally in the correct direc tion. When they are not, convincing plant personnel of the deficiency in their decision structures is a difficult task.

The field of aqueous SEC is of growing interest and also represents an area of active development by several companies, with Polymer Laboratories included. In this area, contrary to the organic SEC scenario, a variety of polymer chemistries are employed in the preparation of the column packing materials. This fact alone makes the practice of aqueous SEC more difficult than its organic counterpart and requires the suppliers of such columns to offer a good level of technical support to the column user. Many of the predictive systems manufacturers are strictly hardware and software oriented. Therefore, they offer minimal training and no application training or technical support. Few plants can achieve minimum benefits from predictive maintenance without training and some degree of technical support. It is therefore imperative that the selected system or system vendors provide a comprehensive support package that includes both training and technical support.

Industrial WT and FT boilers, on the other hand, usually tolerate some limited degree of waterside deposition (but not corrosion), and with proficient operation, proper attention paid to chemical treatments, and good technical support services, may (almost) never require internal cleaning. 

Full-service programs require that the water treatment account representative be part of a larger sales and services and technical support team. When such a team subscribes to quality work standards and environmentally responsible practices, they present a formidable taskforce and a valuable partner to their customers.
