Profitability index is related to NPV analysis. For simple projects that have an initial cash outlay followed by a series of cash inflows, profitability index is a good way to rank and choose projects when it is not possible to select all projects. Profitability index is the present value of the project s cash inflows divided by the project s initial cash outflow. 

Using an example from an earlier chapter, estimate the expected cash inflows and then compute their present values. For example, the expected cash inflow for period one is 1,500. It is then converted to a present value using a 10% discount rate. 

The PV for period one cash inflows is 1,363.64. Sum each of the three years present values and divide by the initial cash outflow (initial investment) of 2,500. 

A profitability index greater than 1 indicates the PV of cash flows is greater than the investment. This leads to a decision to accept the

The Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS), a directorate of AIChE, was established in 1985 to develop and disseminate technical information for use in the prevention of major chemical accidents.
