Technical Publications Announcements

Currently, NASA has four series of technical publications. These include NASA Technical Reports, which are unclassified presentations of a body of information which is considered to be complete and important NASA Technical Notes, which supplement but do not overlap the Technical Reports NASA Technical Memorandums, which are principally classified documents to be reissued as reports or notes if they are considered to be of general interest at the time they are declassified and NASA Technical Translations, which present information which has been published in a foreign language. NASA reports and publications are announced in Technical Publications Announcements. This is a biweekly abstract list of all published NASA documents. It is supplemented by the annually published Index of NASA Technical Publications. Both are available from the NASA Office of Technical Information and Educational Programs, Code ETD, Washington 25, D.C. 

Scientific and Technical Aerospace Reports (STAR). 1963-1995, print version 1996- Web version, Lithicum Heights, MD NASA Center for Aerospace Information. Originally printed, but now published online in a PDF version, this index provides comprehensive coverage of the technical report literature of aeronautics, astronautics, and the space sciences. Covers technical reports from NASA and its contractors, as well as reports from other agencies, companies, and labs in the United States and elsewhere. Issue contents are arranged by subject with multiple indexes at the end of each issue. STAR was preceded by the Index of NASA Technical Publications and Technical Publication Announcements from 1958 through 1962. When used in conjunction with International Aerospace Abstracts, comprehensive coverage of all publications in the field is provided. Translations. This collection contains abstracts and complete translations of Russian and other foreign technical publications as well as weekly reviews of various areas of Soviet science. Among the translation series available through the Office of Technical Services on a subscription basis are Current Review of the Soviet Technical Press (weekly) and English Abstracts of Selected Articles from Soviet Bloc and Mainland China Technical Journals. Translations are assigned an identification number which consists of the year of the translation followed by the accession number. All translations received by OTS or the John Crerar Library in Chicago are announced in Technical Translations, which is discussed below. 

Additional data for a particular type of fuel injection might be discovered by means of comprehensive bibliographies available (15, 22, 35, 84)- Most current work is eventually noted in one or more of the following publications Aeronautical Engineering Review, Aircraft Engineering, Jet Propulsion, NACA Research Abstracts (unclassified and confidential), Title Announcement Bulletins of the Armed Services Technical Information Agency (unclassified and confidential), U. S. Government Research Reports. 

There are two ways for keeping up to date on new trade publications. Once you are on the mailing list for such material, the companies issuing the trade publication will automatically send you the new issues and, in some cases, will inform you which ones they supersede. It is not possible nor desirable to be on the mailing list of every company. The best way to be aware of new products and the existence of trade publications describing them is to scan a certain number of trade and technical new journals routinely for advertisements and announcements. As new reports are received they are screened for suitability, AD (ASTIA Document) numbers are assigned, and the reports are cataloged and analyzed. To announce new reports, ASTIA publishes The Technical Abstract Bulletin (TAB). This is a semimonthly publication, arranged by subject fields of interest. TAB lists both classified and unclassified reports but is itself unclassified and also has a numerical index of all reports announced in it. In addition, it includes a Notice of Changes in Classifications or Limitations in the status of documents which were previously announced. As a further reference aid, ASTIA publishes quarterly and annual indexes which list reports by descriptors and by sources. 

Editors of trade publications and scientific journals are acquainted with many of the manufacturers publications, and the editors may be a source of considerable current information. Also, the advertising pages of trade papers carry announcements of new technical data bulletins. Most of the large manufacturers and many small ones have established technical service organizations which prepare publications and may be consulted in specific cases in which general data are not sufficient. 

The United States government produces many publications which will assist those assessing risks associated with chemical substances. The most important way in which details of publications are made known is through the US National Technical Information Service (NTIS) which produces Government Reports Announcements and Index, a fortnightly listing of abstracts of reports [2]. NTIS also publishes a series of weekly Abstract Newsletters on topics such as chemistry, and environmental polluticm and control. 

Societies and associations play a vital role in the discipline of nuclear engineering. The following societies create standards and technical documents as well as publishing conference proceedings and journals to disseminate nuclear engineering literature. Society Web sites are another useful source of information where you can discover additional details about the society, purchase materials, or view their publications. Upcoming conference dates are often listed on these pages, as are professional development opportunities and employment announcements. 

The arrangement of the abstracts within any one section in Chemical Abstracts is determined by the original document type (first, abstracts of journal articles, including citation of review articles, then abstracts about technical reports, deposited documents and dissertations, followed by announcements of new books and, finally, patent abstracts). The abstracts under the various document headings are arranged according to the content of the original publication (Subsections).
