The theory of molecular interactions has been reviewed extensively in the past and many monographs and contributed volumes are available in this field. Three of them45-47) are especially recommended because they give the same kind of insight into the problems that is needed here. We do not intend to present an extensive discussion on the methods applied to intermolecular forces in this paper. The interested reader will be referred to some selected articles. Nevertheless it seems necessary at least to introduce the type of notation we prefer here and to stress some points that we feel to be important for a critical evaluation of the calculated results.

The following selected articles are recommended to readers who wish to know more about specific subjects. In many cases they are too advanced for first year students but are very useful sources of information for subjects that may be studied in later years. 

The number of publications in which steric effects are reported is such that a complete coverage of all would be too lengthy we have rather selected articles in which steric effects are studied quantitatively. 

Hyphenated techniques utilizing HPLC plays very important role in drug development process, especially LC-MS. The power of LC combined with an universal detector is an optimal combination to determine related substances and peak homogeneity. Selected articles are referenced for the reader [30, 49,50]. 

The third source of information on software usage is even smaller, but highly relevant. Translations. This collection contains abstracts and complete translations of Russian and other foreign technical publications as well as weekly reviews of various areas of Soviet science. Among the translation series available through the Office of Technical Services on a subscription basis are Current Review of the Soviet Technical Press (weekly) and English Abstracts of Selected Articles from Soviet Bloc and Mainland China Technical Journals. Translations are assigned an identification number which consists of the year of the translation followed by the accession number. All translations received by OTS or the John Crerar Library in Chicago are announced in Technical Translations, which is discussed below.

In 1944, both Natural a Synthetic Fibers 209) and Textile Technology Digest 214) were started. The former, edited by Harris and Mark, is a loose-leaf literature and patent service with full abstracts of selected articles. The latter, compiled by the Institute of Textile Technology, has relatively short abstracts and covers leading textile journals. 

A list of patents has not been given in the bibliography inasmuch as specific searches would be necessary for any project. In selecting articles for the bibliography, an attempt was made to represent the various types of information available. News items, however, have not been cited. Some references are included on processes which have been offered but have never been put into operation and on processes which have been in commercial operation but are currently not being used. Under miscellaneous headings, the specific subject matter is noted after the reference unless the article includes discussion of a number of hydrocarbons or processes. 

Were the criteria used to select articles for inclusion appropriate ... 

The use of enzymes in non-aqueous solvents can be an advantageous alternative to reactions in water, especially for poorly water-soluble substrates and products, e. g. in the synthesis of esters, lactones or selected peptides. However, the knowledge of how solvents influence enzyme activity and selectivity is still not profound. As it is impossible to cover all relevant aspects within this chapter, the reader is referred to some selected articles for further reading115, 64 751. Here some of the basics will be discussed briefly in Sect. 7.5.4 reactor concepts for the use of enzymes in organic solvents will be presented. 

This chapter discusses selected articles dealing with the application of lichens as biomonitors of chemical elements in the environment. In the recent decade the relevant literature focused on the methods available to monitor effects of air pollution by means of in situ, resuspended or transplanted lichens in urban, industrial, rural and remote environments. According to the results of Ebdon et al. obtained from two series of MMA and styrene copolymers, char promotion could not be easily anticipated only from the phosphorus content. This means that a range of parameters modifies the efficiency of phosphorus as a flame retardant not only the phosphorus content, but also its chemical environment, its position in the macromolecule, and the host polymer. In this short chapter it is not possible to list in detail the influence of all these parameters. Therefore, only the main conclusions will be discussed in the following, from a narrow set of selected articles.

Modification procedures for carbon electrodes are quite diverse. For convenience, in this chapter, they are broadly divided into two parts covalent and non-covalent modifications. It is worth mentioning that this chapter is not intended to cover the entire hterature on carbon modification, instead the focus is given on basic features of each process of modification and how it changes the nature of carbon electrode surfaces. From the wide variety of applications of modified electrodes, a few selected articles are discussed in short at the end of each modification process to demonstrate its utility.

Before the DH lab was officially created, its director initiated collaboration with a Swiss newspaper focusing on their database of 200 years of digitalised articles (4 million articles). This base is currently accessible in image and text mode. Users can access it freely and select articles using a search-engine. The project is about transforming this large number of disparate, incomplete and (to a certain extent) unreliable archives into a coherent and searchable reconstruction of the past. The idea is to extract from this textual and visual database semantic information that could permit users to browse and visualise differently the information contained in the corpus. 

In 1999, Kalman and Varenhorst [20] published a survey of the pertinent literature which appeared during 1973-1997 on renal artery embolization for management of renal cell carcinoma (Table 16.3).
