VC is highly reactive, and like styrene, will start to polymerize with itself if it just sits in a tank. Phenol, in trace amounts, is an effective polymerization inhibitor and.is normally added to VC on the way to storage. [Pg.141]

Organic compounds normally cause Htde or no corrosion of magnesium. Tanks or other containers of magnesium alloys are used for phenol [108-95-2] methyl bromide [74-96 ] and phenylethyl alcohol [60-12-8]. Most alcohols cause no more than mild attack, but anhydrous methanol attacks magnesium vigorously with the formation of magnesium methoxide [109-88-6]. Storage. Phenol is shipped in dmms, tank tmcks, and tank cars. It is loaded and shipped at elevated temperatures as a bulk Hquid. In storage, phenol may acquire a yeUow, pink, or brown discoloration which makes it unusable for some purposes. The discoloration is promoted by the action of water, light, air, and catalysts, eg, traces of iron or copper. When stored as a solid in the original dmm or in nickel, glass-lined, or tanks lined with baked phenolic resin, phenol remains colorless for a number of weeks. [Pg.290]

Unrefined alkylphenols are generally produced in the simple batch reactors described eadier. An alkene with between 8 and 12 carbon atoms reacts with phenol to produce a mixture of reactants, mono alkylphenols, and dialkylphenols. These mixtures usually do not free2e above 25 °C and so are Hquid at production and storage conditions. The product is generally used in the same factory or complex in which it is produced so shipment typically consists of pumping the material from the reactor to a storage tank. [Pg.64]

Alkenes with between 4 and 24 carbon atoms react with phenol to produce an unrefined phenol—alkylphenol mixture. This mixture is fed to the distillation train where the phenol is removed for recycle and the product is isolated. The product is then stored in heated tanks made of stainless steel or phenoHc resin lined carbon steel. These tanks are blanketed with inert gas to avoid product discoloration associated with oxidation. [Pg.64]

The cmde product formed from the alkylation of phenol with isoamylene contains principally 2-/ r2 -amylphenol, 4-/ r2 -amylphenol, and 2,4-di-/ r2 -amylphenol. 4-/ r2 Amylphenol is purified to its typical assay of 99+% by fractional distillation. 4-/ r2 -Amylphenol [80-46-6] is commercially available as a soHd, flaked material packaged ia paper or plastic bags (25 kg net weight) or as a molten material ia tank wagon or railcar quantities. [Pg.65]

Methylphenol. This phenol, commonly known as o-cresol, is produced synthetically by the gas phase alkylation of phenol with methanol using modified alumina catalysis or it may be recovered from naturally occurring petroleum streams and coal tars. Most is produced synthetically. Reaction of phenol with methanol using modified zeoHte catalysts is a concerted dehydration of the methanol and alkylation of the aromatic ring. 2-Methylphenol [95-48-7] is available in 55-gal dmms (208-L) and in bulk quantities in tank wagons and railcars. [Pg.67]

Seventy years ago, nearly all resources for the production of commodities and many technical products were materials derived from natural textiles. Textiles, ropes, canvas, and paper were made of local natural fibers, such as flax and hemp. Some of them are still used today. Epoxy phenolic coatings These materials are also cured at relatively high temperatures and are made by the reaction of the epoxy resin with the phenolic resin. Organic chemicals Most organic liquids, other than the stronger acids, only attack zinc slowly. Zinc is, therefore, suitable for storage tanks for liquid hydrocarbons such as motor fuels, for phenols and for trichlorethy-lene degreasers.
