The thermal stabiUty of epoxy phenol—novolak resins is useful in adhesives, stmctural and electrical laminates, coatings, castings, and encapsulations for elevated temperature service (Table 3). Filament-wound pipe and storage tanks, liners for pumps and other chemical process equipment, and corrosion-resistant coatings are typical appHcations using the chemically resistant properties of epoxy novolak resins. [Pg.364]

Electrical Laminates. A significant use for epoxy resins is in the manufacture of copper-clad epoxy-glass printed circuit boards. Systems are available that meet the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), GIO, Gil, FR3, FR4, FR5 specifications. Currently the majority of boards are manufactured to the fiame-retardant FR4 specification. The flame retardance is achieved by the use of a soHd epoxy resin based on... [Pg.371]

Their main applications have been in heat-resistant structural laminates, electrical laminates resistant to solder baths, chemical-resistant filament-wound pipe and high-temperature adhesives. [Pg.763]

Epoxy resins are used in cold setting or thermo setting adhesives, in production of industrial composites and films of high resistance and permanence. Over half of production is used in protective coatings. Electrical laminates and filament windings are also important uses, representing about 20% of consumption. [Pg.776]

Typically, a low molecular weight solid epoxy resin and latent curing agent, such as dicyandiamide dissolved in an appropriate solvent, are widely used in dry lay-up formulations for electrical laminates for computers, aerospace applications, and communications equipment. Wet lay-up systems are almost exclusively based on low-viscosity resins cured with aliphatic amines. These ambient cure resin systems are used primarily for manufacture of large chemical-resistant tanks, ducting, and scrubbers. Filament winding is used... [Pg.959]

Caustic soda is commonly used as the catalyst for the manufacture of resols for mechanical and decorative laminates. However, it is not used in electrical laminates because it adversely affects the electrical insulation properties. For electrical-grade resols ammonia is the usual catalyst, and the resins are usually dissolved in industrial methylated spirits. The use of cresylic acid (m-cresol content 50-55%) in place of phenol yields laminating resins of better electrical properties. [Pg.471]

The novolacs are another class of epoxy resins. They are produced by reacting a novolac resin, usually formed by the reaction of o-cresol or phenol and formaldehyde with epichlorohydrin. Figure 3.5 shows the general structure. These materials are used as transfer molding powders, electrical laminates, and parts where superior thermal properties and high resistance to solvents and chemicals are required. [Pg.181]

E-glass was originally developed for the construction of electrical laminates for use in the printed circuit board industry. Hence its name E-glass. It has however adapted itself well to the needs of the composite industry and today is the most commonly used reinforcing fibre. It comes in two distinct varieties ... [Pg.287]
