Phenol treating

Lubricating Oil Manufacture This consists of solvent deasphalting, phenol treating, and solvent dewaxing. In dewaxing, waxy lube is diluted with a solvent such as propane or methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), and cooled to crystallize the wax which is then removed by filtration. 

Another example of an unsteady state condensible blowdown system is the design for a phenol condensible blowdown tank. A blowdown tank is used in phenol treating plants to handle streams containing phenol and heavy hydrocarbons (lubricating oil stocks). The blowdown tank is illustrated in Figure 4. Phenol has been reported at concentrations of 7 and 28.6 ppm in smoked summer sausage and smoked pork belly, respectively (EPA 1980), and was identified but not quantified in mountain cheese (Dumont and Adda 1978), fried bacon (Ho et al. 1983), fried chicken (Tang et al. 1983), and black fermented tea (Kaiser 1967). Phenol has also been found in honey at concentrations ranging from 0 (detection limit 0.1 ppm) to 19 ppm (Spoms 1981). It was present each time the honey was collected with phenol-treated boards. 

To isolate the phenol, treat the residue in the flask with aqueous sodium carbonate until alkaline and extract the mixture with ether. Wash the ethereal extract with saturated aqueous sodium carbonate, and then with 2 m sodium hydroxide solution. Acidify the sodium hydroxide solution (to Congo red paper) and extract the liberated phenol with ether. Characterise the phenol as in Section 9.6.6, p. 1248. 

Onodera et al. [8] examined the applicability of isotachophoresis to the identification and determination of chlorinated mono- and dicarboxylic acids in chlorinated effluents. Four electrolyte systems for the separation of acids were evaluated. The potential unit values in each system were determined for the chlorinated acids. A mechanism for the reaction of phenol with hypochlorite in dilute aqueous solutions is suggested, based on results from the isotachophoretic analysis of diethyl ether extracts taken from phenol treated with hypochlorite. 

Acetone- or phenol-treated or irradiated cells usually are less sensitive, presumably due to structural modifications in the proteoglycan component.

The incinerator burned pentachloro-phenol-treated wooden ammunition boxes and there was no afterburning. Methyl ethers of pentachlorophenol—pentachloroanisole [1825-21-4] and tetrachlorohydroquinone dimethyl ether [944-78-5] — formed from microbial methylation of pentachlorophenol have been identified in the pg/m range in marine air samples from both the northern and southern hemispheres (Atlas et al. 1986). 

According to Fig. 1, untreated inner veneer type OPS plywood generally retained lowest shear strength compared to treated OPS plywood. Highest strength retention (66.8%) was obtained in phenolic treated OPS plywood made from 100% outer layer veneer, whilst inner layer type veneer came second with 60.5% shear strength retained. 

Fujii and Villee (124) reported that RNA, isolated by cold phenol extraction from the vesicular glands of adult rats or immature testosterone-treated animals and then treated with DNase and pro-nase, can stimulate growth and incorporation of labeled leucine into protein when the RNA is instilled into the central lumen of the seminal vesicles of immature or postpubertal rats. Treatment of the RNA preparations with RNase abolished these effects. RNA from seminal vesicle of an untreated immature or orchiectomized adult rat was ineffective. In more recent experiments from the same laboratory (125), the vesicular gland RNA from sexually mature rats was extracted with cold phenol, treated with DNase and ethanol and ether, and then separated into poly(A) RNA and poly(A) RNA fractions by chromatography on Sepharose 4B-inidylic acid. When the desalted RNA fractions were instilled into seminal vesicles of castrated rats, only the poly(A) RNA... 

To conclude this part of this section, we include an interesting study that was reported in 2012 by Ikawa et al. [141], in which phenols treated with nonafluorobutenesulfonyl fluoride (where Nf=S02(CF2)3CF3) underwent the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction in moderate yields under palladium catalysis (Pd(OAc)2 or Pd2(dba)3), using SPhos as the ligand and a weak base. The reaction proceeds through nonaflation of the phenols, that is, via an activated nonafluorobutanesulfonyl intermediate. 

Phenol treated with alkaline hypochlorite in the presence of ammonia forms indophenol blue. chemistry of this reaction is complicated. The first step is the reaction of ammonia with hypochlorite forming monochloramine (I). 

The maintenance of a higher temperature at the raffinate outlet than at the extract outlet of an extraction column is useful in propane deasphalting and phenol treating, but the situation with respect to other solvents is not clear. However, in furfural extraction little benefit occurs (the raffinate has a higher Viscosity Index, but the yield is smaller).
