This idea that the heat was transfered by a random walk was used early on by Einstein [21] to calculate the thermal conductance of crystals, but, of course, he obtained numbers much lower than those measured in the experiment. As we now know, crystals at low enough T support well-defined quasiparticles—the phonons—which happen to carry heat at these temperatures. Ironically, Einstein never tried his model on the amorphous solids, where it would be applicable in the / fp/X I regime. 

The similarity in the rate laws does not allow a clear choice to be made between mechanisms, but Mechanism A is required in H20 by the observation of general base catalysis. However, the relative stability of the (red) T° intermediate in Me2SO (this is dependent on the nature of the AA side chain, cf. Section III,C) in the absence of proton-ated amine makes us prefer Mechanism B for reaction in this solvent, since the solvent is unable to assist the departure of MeOH. The similar catalytic rate constants found for B = imidazole, Af-methylimidazole (26) suggest that transfer of the proton from T+ to the alcohol function remains stepwise (i.e., via T°) since N-methylimidazole cannot carry out a concerted transfer. Such general acid-catalyzed loss of MeOH from T° supports a suggestion made many years ago by Burnett and Davies relating to purely organic esters (62). 

Imagine you re on a jury. The prosecuting attorney turns to the jury box and says, The defendant is clearly guilty. I just know it. He doesn t offer any evidence to support his assertion. Absurd, of course. No legitimate lawyer working in her client s best interest would make such a claim if she weren t able to support it. The rule is if you can t support it, don t include it, and it is as important for writers as it is for attorneys. 

For example, you might believe that Americans today work more hours and have less leisure time than at any other time in our history. There are probably statistics out there to support this assertion, but after a quick search on the Internet, you find nothing. Unless you re willing to put in more research time to find what you need, as strongly as you may feel about the idea, since you can t support it, you shouldn t include it. 

Writers use many strategies to make their essay more convincing. They provide specific details to make ideas more concrete, they establish credibility and acknowledge counterarguments, they don t include assertions they can t support, they avoid absolutes, and they take care not to offend their audience. 

Your thesis isn t supported by your essay. You do have a thesis, but the body of your essay supports another (perhaps similar) idea. This often happens when writers discover, through the drafting process, that they feel differently about their topic than they originally thought. As a result, they end up building a case for a different thesis. If your essay does indeed support an idea that s different from your thesis (and that idea still addresses the assignment), the easiest way to correct the problem is to rewrite your thesis to fit your essay. 

Chemists proposed many structures for benzene. However, the facts didn t support any of the possibilities until Kekule proposed a ring structure in 1865. Some of the proposed structures, including Kekule s, are in Figure 6-1. 

As you read the first draft of your paper, you might come across a number of problems. For example, you might find misspelled words or confusing sentences. You might find that your thesis isn t supported adequately. One way to review your paper is to tackle different levels of problems at different times. Here are three main levels to look at.

Smith and Quinn (T ) supported cuprous chloride solutions in a relatively inert, porous polyvinyl chloride filter which was 190 pm thick. They were studying CO facilitated transport. 

Ceramic and metallic monolith structures have a geometrical surface area in the range 2.0-4.0m T support volume. This is much too low to adequately perform the catalytic conversion of the exhaust gas components. Check these and other major newspaper sites. Your interviewer will be impressed if you can say, "I read in the New York Times last week that your company has decided to. .. " But don t forget to do your homework. You don t want to get into a discussion about the company if you can t support your end of the conversation.
