It is uncertain where it was first discovered that a combination of hydrated non-hydraulic lime and a pozzolan produces a hydraulic mixture (see also Pozzolanic reaction), but concrete made Irom such mixtures was first used by the Ancient Macedonians and three centuries later on a large scale by Roman engineers. They used both natural pozzolans (trass or pumice) and artificial pozzolans (groimd brick or pottery) in these concretes. Uses and Treatments of Hardwood Plywood. Most early appHcations of hardwood plywood were those where the hardwood plywood was better adapted to the use than soHd wood. One of the most important early uses was in curved or formed parts, an appHcation particularly suited to the use of veneers which could be molded into intricate shapes during the pressing and bonding process. Metallurgy. Lithium forms alloys with numerous metals. Early uses of lithium alloys were made in Germany with the production of the lead alloy, BahnmetaH (0.04% Li), which was used for bearings for railroad cars, and the aluminum alloy, Scleron. In the United States, the aluminum alloy X-2020 (4.5% Cu, 1.1% Li, 0.5% Mn, 0.2% Cd, balance Al) was introduced in 1957 for stmctural components of naval aircraft. The lower density and stmctural strength enhancement of aluminum lithium alloys compared to normal aluminum alloys make it attractive for uses in airframes. A distinct lithium—aluminum phase (Al Li) forms in the alloy which bonds tightly to the host aluminum matrix to yield about a 10% increase in the modules of elasticity of the aluminum lithium alloys produced by the main aluminum producers. The density of the alloys is about 10% less than that of other stmctural aluminum alloys. [Pg.224]

Sodium alumiaate is used ia the treatment of iadustrial and municipal water suppHes and the use of sodium alumiaate is approved ia the clarification of drinking water. The FDA approves the use of sodium alumiaate ia steam generation systems where the steam contacts food. One early use of sodium alumiaate was ia lime softening processes, where it iacreases the precipitation of ions contributing to hardness and improves suspended soHds removal from the treated water (17). Sodium alumiaate reacts with siHca to leave very low residual concentrations of siHca ia hot process water softeners. The poly(vinyl acetal) prepared from acetaldehyde was developed in the early 1940s by Shawinigan Chemicals, Ltd., of Canada and sold under the trade name Alvar. Early uses included injection-molded articles, coatings for paper and textiles, and replacement for shellac. Drilling Muds in the Petroleum and Natural Gas Industry. Since 1941, chromium chemicals have been used in the drilling of wells to combat fatigue corrosion cracking of drill strings, with about one metric ton of sodium chromate being used aimuaHy for an average West Texas well. Selective gas permeation has been known for generations, and the early use of p adium silver-alloy membranes achieved sporadic industrial use. The excellent electrical insulation properties of polyethylene have led to extensive use in cable and other wire-covering applications. The term novolac refers to the early use of phenolic to replace expensive shellac-based coatings. Novolacs are now those resins made at formaldehyde-to-phenol molar ratios of less than one-to-one. Rubber—an unusual name for an unusual substance—is a naturally occurring aikene polymer produced by more than 400 different plants. The major source is the so-called rubber tree, Hevea brasiliensis, from which the crude material is harvested as it drips from a slice made through the bark.
