People often ask for an example of a detailed project plan. Working out a specific project plan requires in-depth knowledge of a technical system, however. As each system is different, Figure 3 can only show a general overview of a project plan. 

The requirements specification deliverable must include an overview of the process in order to familiarize the application software developer with the user, process and data acquisition requirements of the system, as well as special considerations for the project. The system functionality must be well defined at the outset, in order to provide the prospective supplier/ integrator with enough information to provide a detailed and meaningful quotation.

In the previous chapter an overview was presented of the experiences with NMMS systems currently operating in Western-Europe and in particular in the Netherlands. The Project Scope is not maintained after the project is completed. The Outline Specification, meanwhile, must not be lost. It should be carried forward to form the basis of a System Overview that is maintained during the operational life of the computer system. 

A brief system description covering the system s history (whether it is an entirely new system, a replacement system, or an existing system) and its business purpose is necessary. GxP regulatory authorities expect replacement systems to be as least as reliable as their predecessor manual or automatic system. The aim is to provide a management overview of the project boundaries, defining what is and what is not included within the scope of work. The system description may be supplemented later by a separate System Overview document, especially for larger systems (see Chapter 8).

The external reference specifications (ERS) document is developed. The groupware system EVA consists primarily of a shared work space that all users of a chemical design project can access (Fig. 5.44). In this workspace all of the documents created during a project are inserted and displayed in a structured way. As a result, the work area presents the center for the project-internal and primarily asynchronous information exchange. It also gives a structured overview of the relevant information and procedures throughout a development process in chemical engineering. The structure of the work area was derived from the abstraction-decomposition space introduced in Fig. 5.42.
