Confocal Raman microspectroscopy was used to characterise the chemical composition of clearcoats in paint systems. Weathered and unweathered samples of isolated acrylic/melamine and acrylic/urethane clearcoats, polyester urethane clearcoats in weathered and unweathered samples of a complete paint system on plastic, and UV light cured acrylic clearcoats on polycarbonate substrates were studied (149). [Pg.36]

As early as 1966, natural gas was available to all of the lower 48 states in the United States. During the period 1967—1990, the U.S. transmission system grew from 362,700 km to 450,800 km. Over this same time period, the distribution mains increased from 867,800 km to 1,347,000 km. As plastic pipe and reUable joining technology became available, the use of plastic pipe expanded to include the distribution of gas in low pressure systems. By 1990, approximately 24% of the U.S. distribution system was based on plastic pipe (1). [Pg.173]

Although the proposed appHcations for photochromic systems are numerous, few have received broad use. By far, the most successful commercial apphcation is the use of photochromic silver halide-containing glasses in prescription eyewear. The convenience of having lenses that darken automatically upon exposure to sunlight has proven appealing to spectacle wearers (35). With the increasing penetration of plastic lenses into the ophthalmic market, the desire for plastic photochromic ophthalmic lenses has also increased, and considerable effort has been spent on the discovery of photochromic systems for plastic eyewear. [Pg.165]

In general, fully compatible resin are desirable. However, there are many applications where borderline compatibility is tolerated, and even in some cases, borderline compatibility or controlled incompatibility may enhance tack in adhesive systems. On the other hand, a resin with a borderline compatibility in combination with an oil or plasticizer in an adhesive formulation, will result in phase separation and therefore the migration of the oil or plasticizer to the adhesive surface is favoured. [Pg.618]

The CRC-Elsevier materials selector , 2nd edition, N.A. Waterman, and M.E Ashby CRC Press (1996) ISBN 0412615509. (Now, also available on CD-ROM). Basic reference work. Three-volume compilation of data for all materials includes selection and design guide. The Materials Selector is the most comprehensive and up-to-date comparative information system on engineering materials and related methods of component manufacture. It contains information on the properties, performance and processability of metals, plastics, ceramics, composites, surface treatments and the characteristics and comparative economics of the manufacturing routes which convert these materials into engineering components and products. [Pg.601]

This presentation discusses current EU chemical legislation and examines the shortcomings of some of the regulations in place with respect to dangerous chemicals. The Commission White Paper is discussed, and in particular, the REACH system which involves the registration, evaluation and authorisation of chemicals used in food-contact applications. The impact of the REACH system on food-contact plastic manufacturers is examined, with respect to suppliers of monomers and additives, plastic manufacturers, converters and packagers. [Pg.46]

Adhesion tests can be broken into two categories qualitative and quantitative. They vary from a simple Scotch tape test to a complicated flyer tape test, which requires precision-machined specimens and a very expensive testing facility. Quantitative (such as peeling) tests have been developed for coatings on plastics (12), but not to the same extent for metal-to-metal systems. The quantitative testing systems in limited use, mainly in the electronics industry, are not commonly present in production plants but have been used to aid in process development. For quality control purposes, qualitative tests for metal-to-metal adhesion (13) are usually adequate. The adhesion of some plated metal parts is improved with baking for 1 to 4 h at relatively low (120 to 320°C) temperatures. [Pg.233]

Deposition of thin films is used to change the surface properties of the base material, the substrate. For example, optical properties such as transmission or reflection of lenses and other glass products, can be adjusted by applying suitable coating layer systems. Metal coatings on plastic web produce conductive coatings for film capacitors. Polymer layers on metals enhance the corrosion resistance of the substrate. [Pg.133]
