The sulphur can be determined directly by the method for Sulphur Ointment (see p. 614) or by flask-combustion. [Pg.559]

The estimation of sulphur by methods depending on its degree of solubility in various solvents is quite inaccurate. Henville has drawn attention to the fact that precipitated sulphur is easily soluble in carbon disulphide and slowly soluble in ether and light petroleum, whilst sublimed sulphur is soluble to a great extent in all three solvents. Hence, for example, it is quite useless to try to extract the fat from a sulphur ointment in order to estimate the sulphur in the residue. [Pg.613]

A method of oxidation using nitric acid and bromine (Evers and Elsdon ), since adopted by the U,S.P, for sulphur ointment, has been shown to give high results (Fleck and Ward ) unless nitric acid is removed before precipitation of the sulphate with barium chloride barium nitrate is probably adsorbed and co-precipitated with barium sulphate. Oxidation to sulphate with bromine in sodium hydroxide solution (Allport ) avoids the nitric acid contaminant and yields results comparable with volumetric methods ... [Pg.613]

Smith s Itch Ointment. Flowers of sulphur, 2 ounces sulphate of zinc, 2 drachms powdered hellebore, 4 drachma soft soap, 4 ounces lard, 8 ounces. Mix. [Pg.310]

Nerwell s Compound Tar Ointment. Lard and mutton suet, of each 12 ounces tar, 6 ounces bees -wax, 3 ounces powdered black hellebore, 4 drachms melt and strain, then add flowers of sulphur, 4 onnees. Used for tetters, salt rheum, itch, d c. [Pg.311]

Sulphur is much used both externally and internally in medicine. It is a mild laxative, and acts as a specific when employed as ointment in prurigo and some other cutaneous affections. [Pg.90]

Ointment of Carbolic Acid, . 7 ounces. Sublimed Sulphur.2 ounces. [Pg.250]

Triturate the sulphurated potash in a porcelain mortar, and gradually add the lard, rubbing them together until the ointment is perfectly smooth and free from grittiness. This ointment, when used, should be recently prepared. [Pg.259]

Melt the oil and turpentine together over a water-bath when the mixture is nearly cold, stir in the sulphur, and afterwards the ointment of mercury, until the whole is thoroughly mixed. [Pg.260]

These are prepared by treating fixed oils, for example castor oil, (which contains the triglyceride of the fatty acid 12-hydroxyoleic acid) with sulphuric acid and neutralizing with sodium hydroxide solution. Sulphated castor oil is used pharmaceutically as an emulsifying agent for oil-in-water creams and ointments. It is non-irritant and is used as a cleansing agent when soap is contra-indicated. It is also used in the manufacture of shampoos and deodorant sprays. [Pg.4]

For assay, dissolve about 4 g of ointment by the aid of gentle heat in chloroform and dilute sulphuric acid. Transfer to a separator and extract with portions of dilute sulphuric acid, wash the combined acid extracts... [Pg.117]

This preparation can be assayed by the method given under Atropine Eye Ointment using a weight of sample equivalent to about 25 mg of hyoscine hydrobromide. 1 ml 0-05N sulphuric acid = 0 02192 g... [Pg.121]

Allport has developed a useful method for the assay of mercury in the presence of fatty matter, in which it is precipitated as sulphide in situ from a mixture of organic solvents. Sulphur is not precipitated and the method may be used for most ointments containing wool fat. It is very rapid and to be recommended provided the filtrations are done with solutions as hot as possible. [Pg.413]

For salicylic acid, disperse 2 g in 50 ml of light petroleum and follow the method given under Ointment of Salicylic Acid and Sulphur, p. 560. [Pg.417]

Paste of Resorcinol and Sulphur, B.P.C. Contains 6 25 per cent each of resorcinol and sulphur and 37 5 per cent of zinc oxide in emulsifying ointment. [Pg.551]

Ointment of Salicylic Acid and Sulphur, B.P.C, Salicylic acid 3 per cent and sublimed sulphur 3 per cent in oily cream. [Pg.560]

Ointment of Sulphur, B.P. Contains 10 per cent of sublimed sulphur in simple ointment. [Pg.614]

The observation by Fleck and Ward that paraffin greatly accelerated the combination of sulphur in their method, makes the application of the method to the determination of sulphur in the ointment particularly useful. The further addition of paraffin is obviously unnecessary. [Pg.614]
