Contra-indications

Tetracyclines are used as alternative dnigs in a variety of circumstances when the patient is unable to take the dnig of choice, eg, in patients allergic to penicillin (88,89). Tetracyclines are widely known to cause staining of teeth (and are therefore contra-indicated in children developing permanent teeth), photosensitivity, and, in the case of minocycline, vestibular toxicity. Details of these adverse effects and others associated with administration of tetracyclines have been comprehensively reviewed (96—101). [Pg.182]

Compared with neostigmine,2 D.F.P. produced side effects more commonly and these arose in spite of administration of atropine (0-01 gr.) in an attempt to control the gut symptoms. There were no changes in liver, kidney or haemopoietic function ascribed to D.F.P. Asthma was considered a contra-indication to the use of D.F.P. It can thus be seen that D.F.P. in therapeutic dosage is a safe medicament.3... [Pg.85]

There are various contra-indications for the clinical use of catecholamines. Hyperthyroidism goes together with an abnormal increase of sensitivity of the heart towards the sympathetic transmitters. Patients in whom haloperidol is contraindicated can be treated by intramuscular injection of benzodiazepines, but these can cause respiratory depression or respiratory arrest if given in too high a dose, are contra-indicated in patients with preexisting respiratory depression, and have no specific anti-psychotic effect. [Pg.506]

ACE-I is recommended for all the patients in this stage unless contra-indicated. If contraindications for ACE-I exist an ARB can be given. However, the routine combination of ACE-I, ARB and aldosterone antagonists is not to be recommended. [Pg.596]

Vasodilators can be considered as symptom relievers in this stage. However they are not the main agents for HF treatment because a reduction of mortality has not been established. A combination of hydralazine and a nitrate might be a reasonable strategy if HF symptoms are persistent despite ACE-I and -blocker combination therapy. If this ACE-I and -blocker combination is contra-indicated or is not tolerated. Vasodilators can be used without them. [Pg.596]

Simple antidiarrhoeals are generally contra-indicated, they do not help to reduce mucosal efflux, and may, by reducing colonic transit, predispose to megacolon development. Despite the strong association between non-smoking and the occurrence of ulcerative colitis nicotine patch treatment has shown little evidence of value. [Pg.626]

III.c.2.4. Contra-indications. The contra-indications for the application of single or combined drug therapy with IMNs are obvious. The inserted leaflets in the package of CyC, 5FU, MTX, and Oral MMF, and CyS are self-explanatory. [Pg.664]

This benefit comes at a cost of significant toxicity, particularly neuropathic, and more mature data are necessary to demonstrate the ultimate benefit of adjuvant therapies on improved overall survival. So far irinotecan plus 5-FU based therapy has produced disappointing results in adjuvant treatment. Despite the present lack of data addressing overall survival benefit, oxaliplatin plus 5-FU/leucovorin is widely recommended as the gold standard adjuvant therapy for stage 3 disease. For those whose medical fitness or other contra-indications preclude oxaliplatin based therapy 5-FU/leucovorin on a weekly or monthly schedule is recommended. Oral capecitabine for 6 months has recently been reported to be at least equivalent to 5-FU/leucovorin. [Pg.717]

First, despite the widespread use of medications for pediatric sleep problems in clinical settings for both normal and developmentally delayed children, there are no medications approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of difficulty initiating and/or maintaining sleep in the pediatric population. The sleep specialist should choose a treatment option that is matched to the patient s clinical situation, and is diagnostically driven rather than aimed at simply resolving the symptom. Examples of indications and contra-indications for use of hypnotics in pediatric insomnia are provided in the consensus statement [1],... [Pg.136]

There have been additional recent reports of acute phosphate nephropathy following the use of OSPS (Table 2) [19, 31-33]. Similar to the majority of cases previously described, these patients appear to have taken OSPS at the correct dose and in the absence of clear contra-indications. Also similar to the previous reports, none of the patients have returned to normal renal function and no patient presented in the initial 24 hours with symptoms of hyperphosphatemia such as tetany or cardiac arrest. One case is of particular interest in that the pahent underwent renal biopsy both before and after exposure to OSPS [32]. The patient initially presented with nephrotic syndrome and normal renal function. Renal biopsy revealed membranous nephropathy (MN). In an effort to exclude a second-... [Pg.584]
