Sulphur Sublimed

Sulphur thus produced is almost pure. It is true that the sublimed sulphur in powder—that is, the flowers of sulphur—contains a small quantity of sulphurous acid, which for some purposes it is necessary to remove by washing with water, hut this is pretty nearly the only body it is oontaminatod with the roll sulphur is free from sulphurous acid.

Flowers of sulohur. 4354 In dtsulUng sulphur from Impurities, the first vapors are condensed as a yellow powder called flowers of sulphur sublimed sulphur. 

S xlphuret of Iron. Mix together 4 parts sublimed sulphur, and 7 parts iron filings. Heat iu a crucible in a common fire till the mixture begins to glow then remove tho crucible from tho fire, and cover it up until tho reaction is at an end and the wnolo has become cold. 

Sulphuret of Potassium. Rub together 1 (mnee sublimed sulphur, and 2 ounces dry carbonate of potassa heat it gradually in a covered crucible until it ceases to swell and is completely melted. Pour the liquid on to a marble slab, and, when sold, break the mass into pieces, and keep in weU-stemped bottle of green glass. ( U. S. Ph.)... 

It may also bo prepard by dissolving 8 parts carbonato of soda in 16 ports water add 1 pa sublimed sulphur, and pass sulpburous acid gas, in excess, into the solution boil the liquid in a glass matrass for a few minutes, filter, gently evaporate the filtrate to i its volume, and set it aside in acool place to crys-tallizo. Amorphous or Brown Sulphur, Prepared irom sublimed sulphur by melting it. increasing the beat to 320 Fahr., and continuing it at that temperature for about 30 minutes, or until it becomes brown and viscid it is then poured into water. It is now ductile like war, may be easily moulded, and when cooled does not again become fluid below 600 Fahr. 

Sublimed Sulphur. Sometimes called Flowers of iiuljphur This is prepared by Rubliiuiug sulphur in iron vessels. For medical purposes it is well washed with water and dried by a gentle heat. Cooley.) An aqueous solution of pure anhydrous carbonate of soda will dissolve an appreciable quantity of flowers cf sulphur, by digesting for 10 hour.s at 212 Fahr. Pole.)... 

This mixture is calcined in a crucible of clay or graphite for several hours up to red heat. The crucible should remain closed until it becomes cold, because the carbonaceous matter contained in it might become inflamed, with explosion, if it remained open. The calcined mass is then boiled in water, and the insoluble residue—the sulphide of barium and calcium—is used in the mixing of the material for another operation. The filtered liquid has a pale-yellow colour. Dilute sulphuric acid is then added to it until the orange colour is entirely precipitated. The colour thus produced is mixed with hlwna fixe. If a purer orange hue is desired, the solution of sulpho-antimonite of barium is boiled with -J- part of sublimed sulphur. The sulpho-antimonite of barium is then transfoimed into sulpho-antimonate, which has a composition analogous to that of Schlippe s salt. 

Besides roll sulphur, and sublimed sulphur, there is another form, namely, precipitated sulphur or lac sulphuris. This is a light powder, nearly white, obtained by boiling sulphur with water and an alkali, and adding an acid to the solution, when snlpur separates as a precipitate. It is very finely divided, and appears to contain some water, although not perhaps chemically combined.

Six H. UaraVs Sulphur Soap,—White soap 2 ozs. aud sublimed sulphur oz. are kiturated in a mortar, with 1 or 2 fluid drachms of rectified spirit, until a smooth paste is formed. The spirit should be first coloured strongly frith alkanet root. A few drops of otto of rosea are added to give the soap an agreeable fragrance. 

Application of Salicylic Acid and Sulphur, B,P,C. Contains 2 08 per cent each of salicylic acid and sublimed sulphur in aqueous cream. 

The estimation of sulphur by methods depending on its degree of solubility in various solvents is quite inaccurate. Henville has drawn attention to the fact that precipitated sulphur is easily soluble in carbon disulphide and slowly soluble in ether and light petroleum, whilst sublimed sulphur is soluble to a great extent in all three solvents. Hence, for example, it is quite useless to try to extract the fat from a sulphur ointment in order to estimate the sulphur in the residue. 

A simple and rapid volumetric assay of elemental sulphur was devised by Fleck and Ward, which gives good results with both sublimed sulphur...
