Phase transfer catalysis (PTC) refers to the transfer of ions or organic molecules between two liquid phases (usually water/organic) or a liquid and a solid phase using a catalyst as a transport shuttle. The most common system encountered is water/organic, hence the catalyst must have an appropriate hydrophilic/lipophilic balance to enable it to have compatibility with both phases. The most useful catalysts for these systems are quaternary ammonium salts. Commonly used catalysts for solid-liquid systems are crown ethers and poly glycol ethers. Starks (Figure 4.5) developed the mode of action of PTC in the 1970s. In its most simple... [Pg.119]

An example of some of the newer regulations is the restriction against the use of the popular mud dispersant, chrome lignosulfonate. It is expected that this regulation is merely the initial step toward ruling out the use of all heavy metal salts commonly employed in the formulation of well fluids because of their toxicity to aquatic life and humans. This means that the use of zinc and lead, in addition to chromium, may not be allowed in the future. At least one major oil company has already taken steps in this direction by ruling out the use of heavy metal salts in any well fluid in their worldwide operations. [Pg.633]

This is a process mainly used in power plants for removal of ions by forming insoluble salts. Common precipitating agents are lime, hydrogen sulfide, organic precipitants, and sods ash. Optimum pH depends on the ions to be removed. The removal efficiency for inorganic pollutants is as follows ... [Pg.611]
