Subject Plasticizers

In order to select materials that will maintain acceptable mechanical characteristics and dimensional stability designers must be aware of both the normal and extreme operating environments to which a product will be subject. Plastics properties and processes are influenced by their thermal characteristics such as melt temperature (T ), glass-transition temperature (7 ), dimensional stability, thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, heat capacity, coefficient of thermal expansion, and decomposition (7J. Table 2-18 provides some of these data on different plastics. [Pg.83]

Dislocation theory as a portion of the subject of solid-state physics is somewhat beyond the scope of this book, but it is desirable to examine the subject briefly in terms of its implications in surface chemistry. Perhaps the most elementary type of defect is that of an extra or interstitial atom—Frenkel defect [110]—or a missing atom or vacancy—Schottky defect [111]. Such point defects play an important role in the treatment of diffusion and electrical conductivities in solids and the solubility of a salt in the host lattice of another or different valence type [112]. Point defects have a thermodynamic basis for their existence in terms of the energy and entropy of their formation, the situation is similar to the formation of isolated holes and erratic atoms on a surface. Dislocations, on the other hand, may be viewed as an organized concentration of point defects they are lattice defects and play an important role in the mechanism of the plastic deformation of solids. Lattice defects or dislocations are not thermodynamic in the sense of the point defects their formation is intimately connected with the mechanism of nucleation and crystal growth (see Section IX-4), and they constitute an important source of surface imperfection. [Pg.275]

The best replacement for borosilicate glassware is stainless steel. Stainless steel takes the heat, won t break, and, most importantly, is about as resistant to chemical degradation as the chemist can hope to find. For those items that won t be subjected to direct heat there can be some steel/metal or steel/plastic hybrids. In figure 3 is shown how flasks of any size can be made with two stainless steel mixing bowls welded together. Also shown is the vacuum adaptor and condenser. The resistance to plastic flow can be schematically illustrated by dashpots with characteristic viscosities. The resistance to deformations within the elastic regions can be characterized by elastic springs and spring force constants. In real fibers, in contrast to ideal fibers, the mechanical behavior is best characterized by simultaneous elastic and plastic deformations. Materials that undergo simultaneous elastic and plastic effects are said to be viscoelastic. Several models describing viscoelasticity in terms of springs and dashpots in various series and parallel combinations have been proposed. The above-mentioned codes contain requirements for accelerated durabiUty tests. In addition, interlayer manufacturers and laminators expose test samples for several years under extreme weather conditions, eg, the Florida coast and Arizona desert. The laminated products weather extremely well, with no change in the plastic interlayer. Occasionally, clouding is noted around the edges when exposed to high humidity for long periods, but this is reversible. Colored areas of PVB laminates may fade while subjected to extensive uv/solar irradiation, which could cause an appearance issue. Machine components ate commonly subjected to loads, and hence stresses, which vary over time. The response of materials to such loading is usually examined by a fatigue test. The cylinder, loaded elastically to a level below that for plastic deformation, is rotated. Thus the axial stress at all locations on the surface alternates between a maximum tensile value and a maximum compressive value. A fiber dmm is a cylindrical shipping container made of convolutely wound layers of fiberboard adhered to each other to form a soHd wall. Constmction materials for the ends include metal, plastic, and fiberboard. Fiber dmms are subject to DOT and, for international shipment, U.N. regulations when used forha2ardous materials.
