Machine components ate commonly subjected to loads, and hence stresses, which vary over time. The response of materials to such loading is usually examined by a fatigue test. The cylinder, loaded elastically to a level below that for plastic deformation, is rotated. Thus the axial stress at all locations on the surface alternates between a maximum tensile value and a maximum compressive value. The cylinder is rotated until fracture occurs, or until a large number of cycles is attained, eg, lO. The test is then repeated at a different maximum stress level. The results ate presented as a plot of maximum stress, C, versus number of cycles to fracture. In a typical indentation experiment the indenter is pressed onto the surface under investigation and the load is successively increased up to a certain maximum load. In the so-called compliance approach both load and indenter displacement are recorded and plotted as a load-displacement curve, the so-called compliance curve. If the experiment is exclusively run in the compressive load regime, the curve is also referred to as the load-penetration curve. Upon loading, elastic deformations occur succeeded by plastic ones. In 1812, even before Maxwell, Kelvin and Boltzman, the Scottish scientist Sir David Brewster (1781-1868) discovered that certain transparent optically isotropic solids (e.g., glass) when loaded developed optical characteristics of natural crystals.
