Salicin 13 was first introduced into medicinal use by Maclagan27 in 1876 as the single agent, although as a part of herbals the use of extracts of Salix or Spiraea ulmaria (the source of spirin in aspirin ) for treatments of fevers and pain dated from the days of Hippocrates. It is probable that the formal identification of salicin in more modern medicine would be the letter from the Reverend Edmund Stone to the President of the Royal Society in 1763 covering the use of the compound for treatment of fever . There are various stories and/or anecdotes over the transition from salicin to acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin), but the most probable steps were as follows. [Pg.8]

Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, who lived sometime between 460 and 377 bce, left historical records of a powder made from the bark and leaves of the willow tree. He used this powder to relieve headaches and other pains. Native Americans also recognized the medical properties of the willow tree they chewed the willow s leaves and inner bark or boiled a tea made from them to relieve fever or other minor pain like toothaches, headaches, or arthritis. By 1829, scientists discovered that it was the compound called salicin in willow plants that provided the pain relief.A German company called Bayer patented aspirin on March 6, 1889.The folks at Bayer came up with the name aspirin, using the a in acetyl chloride (the chemical compound contained in salicin), the spir in spiraea ulmaria (the genus of plant containing this compound) and in, which was a then familiar name ending for medicines. Aspirin was first sold as a powder, but in 1915, the first aspirin tablets were made. [Pg.18]

It appears that salicylic acid had already been prepared prior to 1897. Hoffman s achievement was to develop a very simple synthetic procedure and to recognize that it has effects similar to salicylic acid but with much weaker stomach irritation. The medical benefits were proven and the drug was in widespread medical use within 2 years. The name Aspirin was derived from acetyl (letter A in the beginning) and the botanical name for meadowsweet Spiraea ulmaria), which also contains derivatives of salicylic acid the old German name for salicylic acid was Spirsaure. The suffix -in is a common one in chemical names. [Pg.199]

Salicylic acid is found naturally in certain plants [Spiraea ulmaria, Andromeda leschenaultii), particularly fruits. [Pg.12]
