Acaroid resin

Benzoic acid in the free state, or in the form of simple derivatives such as salts, esters, and amides, is widely distributed in nature. Gum benzoin (from styrax ben in) may contain as much as 20% benzoic acid in the free state or in combinations easily broken up by heating. Acaroid resin (from anthorrhoca haslilis) contains from 4.5 to 7%. Smaller amounts of the free acid are found in natural products including the scent glands of the beaver, the bark of the black cherry tree, cranberries, pmnes, ripe cloves, and oil of anise seed. Pern and Tolu balsams contain benzyl benzoate the latter contains free benzoic acid as well. The urine of herbivorous animals contains a small proportion of the glycine derivative of benzoic acid, hippuric acid [495-69-2] (CgH CONHCH2COOH). So-called natural benzoic acid is not known to be available as an item of commerce. [Pg.52]

Shellac, boiled linseed oil, resins, paraffin wax, beeswax, litbographic varnish and acaroid resin are used in various pyrotechnic formulations. Similarly chlorinated rubber powder has also been used successfully as a binder. Some of tbe waxes and resins which are of natural origin are still popular and are in use. In order to improve quahty and avoid batch-to-batch variation, manufacturers of pyrotechnics are moving from natural binders to man-made binders. [Pg.335]

In firework formulas 81-124, unless stated otherwise, it is assumed that the chemicals are ground to pass a British Standard 120 mesh sieve (124 / ). Shellac 30/200 has a wide range of particle size and so gives a longer burning time. Red Gum or Acaroid Resin has a similar wide range but usually passes 80 mesh (190/i). [Pg.366]

A typical separation is shown in Figure 6.2 [10]. Acaroid resin is a component of a pyrotechnic composition, and was suspected to be the cause of a processing defect. Two grades of resin were compared by a number of analytical techniques. The resin is a natural product described as a resinotannic ester of cinnamic and p-coumaric acids . It is a polymeric material containing phenolic and aromatic residues. It is also said to contain up to 10% of benzoic, p-coumaric, and cinnamic acids. It was suggested that batch-to-batch variations might account for the differences in performance. [Pg.143]

Accroides n. Resinous accumulation which occurs on the leaf and stem of the Xanthor-rhoea species. It is native to Austraha and Tasmania. It appears on the market in red and yellow forms, both of which are soluble in industrial alcohol, and are used in spirit varnishes. The resin is also described as Black Boy Gum , Botany Bay Resin, grass tree gum, gum acaroid, acaroid resin, red gum, and yacca or yacka gum.
