Pimenta acris

Bay Oil occurs as a yellow or brown-yellow liquid with a pleasant, aromatic odor and a pungent, spicy taste. It is the volatile oil distilled from the leaves of Pimenta acris Kostel (Fam. Myrtaceae). It is soluble in alcohol and in glacial acetic acid. Its solutions in alcohol are acid to litmus. [Pg.44]

Monoterpenoids are responsible for fragrances and flavors of many plants and thus their products are used in perfumery and as spices. To date over 1,500 monoterpenoids are known, and these constitute acyclic, monocyclic, and bicyclic monoterpenoids (32), which occur in nature as hydrocarbons, alcohols, aldehydes, and carboxylic acids and their esters. Several acyclic monoterpenoid hydrocarbons are known, and these include trienes such as 3-myrcene (Cl), a-myrcene (C2), (Z)-a-ocimene (C3), ( )-a-ocimene (C4), (Z)-3-ocimene (C5), and ( )-P-ocimene (C6). 3-Myrcene and 3-ocimene are constituents of basil (Oci-mum basilicum, Labiatae) and bay (Pimenta acris, Myrtaceae), pettitgrain (Citrus vulgaris, Rutaceae) leaves, strobiles of hops (Humulus lupulus, Cannabaceae), and several other essential oils. Unsaturated acyclic monoterpene alcohol constituents of plants and their derived aldehydes play a signihcant role in the perfume industry. A sample of bay oil from Fiji, examined at the Imperial Institute in 1909, differed considerably from ordinary commercial bay oil. The oil was pale brown, and had the characteristic odour of bay oil, with, in addition, a distinct anise-like odour. On examination it furnished the following constants Specific gravity at 15 C., 0 961 optical rotation in 100 mm. tube at 20 C., - 1 58. The oil was soluble in its own volume or more of 90 per cent, alcohol, and contained only 23 per cent, of phenols instead of the 60 per cent, found in good bay oil, and was unusually rich in methyl ethers. In view of recent investigations recorded in the Kew Bulletin it seems probable that the Fiji sample consisted of oil derived from the leaves of the form of Pimenta acris known as Bois d Inde Anise . [Pg.387]
