Siam benzoin

Vanillin, CgHgOj, is one of the most important synthetic perfumes. It is the active odorous ingredient of the vanilla pod, in which it occurs to the extent of about 2 per cent., appearing on the surface of the bean as a fine white crystalline efflorescence. It occurs naturally also in Sumatra benzoin (about 1 per cent.), Siam benzoin (15 per cent.), and the balsams of Tolu and Peru (traces). Numerous other bodies have been recorded as containing it, such as asafoetida, beetroot and asparagus, the seeds of Lupinus albus, the seeds of Sosa canina, etc.

Benzoin is the balsamic resin obtained from the bark of various Styrax spp. Styrax benzoin Dryand and 5. paralleloneurum Perkins yield Sumatra benzoin 5. tonkinensis (Pierre) Craib ex Hartwich and other related Styrax species yield Siam benzoin. 

The major constituents of Sumatra benzoin are p-coumaryl cinnamate, cinnamic acid, cinnamyl cinnamate (styracin), p-coumaryl benzoate, pinoresinol, benzoic acid, coniferyl cinnamate, and coniferyl benzoate. Both Siam benzoin and Sumatra benzoin are offlcial in pharmacopoeias of many countries however, only Sumatra benzoin is found in the BP. Both types are official in U.S.P., but in the United States Sumatra benzoin is more customarily used in pharmaceutical preparations. 

Benzoin, especially Siam benzoin, has anti-oxidative and preservative properties and is used in cosmetics for these properties. The resinoid is extensively used as a fixative in perfumes, soaps, detergents, creams, and lotions, in amounts up to 0.8% in perfumes (arctander). ... 

Siam benzoin contains no cinnamic acid and is almost entirely soluble in 90 per cent ethanol. It is included in the U.S.P. and the limits for benzoin under that authority include a minimum of 75 per cent alcohol-soluble extractive for Sumatra benzoin and 90 per cent for Siam benzoin. The U S,P, assay for alcohol-soluble extract is taken from the method of Bennett and Bickford. ... 

BENZOIN, GUM BENZOIN, or BENZOIN RESIN is a mixed balsam and resin. SIAM BENZOIN comes from Siam and nearby countries and is from the Styrax benzoin tree. It is of higher quality and usually lighter color than that from other sources. SUMATRA BENZOIN is from Sumatra, Java, and vicinity and is from other varieties of Styrax. Benzoline n. (1) Gum benzoin, as it is more commonly known, is a spirit-soluble resin, which appears on the market as Siam, Palembang, Padang, Sumatra, and Penang benzoins. It has a very pleasant vanilla smell, and it is used partly on account of this, and partly as a plasticizing resin in spirit varnishes. Benzoin is obtained as an exudation from a tree as a result of deliberate incision. (2) (deprecated) Another name for petroleum benzine.
