This chapter begins with a discussion of the structure and stereochemistry of monosaccharides. Then the formation of cyclic structures front monosaccharides is discussed. This is followed by the presentation of a small number of reactions of these compounds. The classic series of experiments that was used to establish the structure of glucose is presented next. Finally, the structures of disaccharides, polysaccharides, and a few other types of carbohydrate-containing compounds are introduced. [Pg.1085]

Because of this continued emphasis on adhesive bonding technology development over the years, the airframes of modem front-line aircraft such as the B-2 bomber and the F-117 and F-22 fighters are largely structurally bonded advanced composites. They tend to be comprised of materials that are more advanced (expensive) than commercial aircraft such as carbon and boron fiber reinforcements with cyanate esters, bismaleimides, polyimides or other high-temperature resin matrices and adhesives. [Pg.1189]

Explosion is burning that takes place sonically, hence, a shock front is produced. The damage mechanisms are physical destruction from the shock wave, collateral damage from falling structures, and human bums. Suffocation and poisoning are not usually associated with an explosion because of its short duration. A reduced scale of the model requires an increased velocity level in the experiments to obtain the correct Reynolds number if Re < Re for the prob lem considered, but the experiment can be carried out at any velocity if Re > RCj.. The influence of the turbulence level is shown in Fig. 12.40. A velocity u is measured at a location in front of the opening and divided by the exhaust flow rate in order to obtain a normalized velocity. The figure show s that the normalized velocity is constant for Reynolds numbers larger than 10 000, which means that the flow around the measuring point has a fully developed turbulent structure at that velocity level. Some of the problem areas mentioned are sometimes overblown by many analysts. That is, they sometimes overemphasize the importance of a particular behavioral characteristic. That characteristic might be important only in one small regime of structural response, and you must know that limitation on the validity of the characteristic. The designer s job, on the other hand, is to either avoid all those problem areas or to in some way overcome them. In Figure 3.8a, a plane shock wave is moving toward a rigid structure. As the incident wave encounters the front wall, the portion striking the wall is reflected and builds up a local, reflected overpressure. For weak waves, the reflected overpressure is slightly greater than twice the incident (side-on) overpressure. In relatively low-reactive fuel-air mixtures, a detonation may only arise as a consequence of the presence of appropriate boundary conditions to the combustion process. These boundary conditions induce a turbulent structure in the flow ahead of the flame front. This turbulent structure is a basic element in the feedback coupling in the process by which combustion rate can grow more or less exponentially with time.
