Steel surface rust

After commissioning the protection installation, an on potential of = -0.82 V was imposed. In the course of a few years of operation, the protection current rose from 100 to 130 mA. The mean values were = -0.63 V and the values were t/ = -0.50 V. An inspection carried out after 5 years showed that cathodic blisters, whose contents were alkaline, had developed in the coating. The steel surface at these places was rust free and not attacked. Uncoated steel at the pores was covered with CaC03 deposits as a result of cathodic polarization. [Pg.460]

Effect of mass The rate of rusting of steel in the atmosphere is affected to some extent by the mass of the part concerned, because this determines the speed at which the surface temperature adjusts itself to fluctuations in the ambient temperature, the amount of condensation during humid periods, and the time during which dew or rain remains in contact with the steel. A problem associated with plant inspection is the coupling of the probe to the metal under examination. The exterior surface of plant can be covered in rust which causes problems in coupling the probe to the metal and results in spurious and inaccurate results. Steel, unless adequately protected with a film of oil subsequent to rolling mill operations, has a tendency to form surface rust rather quickly. This rust on the surface of the metal prevents proper conversion coating. A traditional method of removing rust is an acid applied by power spray equipment.
