Maintenance of isothermal conditions requires special care. Temperature differences should be minimised and heat-transfer coefficients and surface areas maximized. Electric heaters, steam jackets, or molten salt baths are often used for such purposes. Separate heating or cooling circuits and controls are used with inlet and oudet lines to minimize end effects. Pressure or thermal transients can result in longer Hved transients in the individual catalyst pellets, because concentration and temperature gradients within catalyst pores adjust slowly. [Pg.516]

In any procedure involving the handling of molten sulfur, the lines and spray nozzles must be steam-jacketed, and steam pressure must hold the molten sulfur within the range of 135—155°C, where its viscosity is at a minimum. Above 160°C, the viscosity rises sharply, and at 190°C its viscosity is 13,000 times that at 150°C. [Pg.184]

Batch distillation (see Fig. 3) typically is used for small amounts of solvent wastes that are concentrated and consist of very volatile components that are easily separated from the nonvolatile fraction. Batch distillation is amenable to small quantities of spent solvents which allows these wastes to be recovered onsite. With batch distillation, the waste is placed in the unit and volatile components are vaporized by applying heat through a steam jacket or boiler. The vapor stream is collected overhead, cooled, and condensed. As the waste s more volatile, high vapor pressure components are driven off, the boiling point temperature of the remaining material increases. Less volatile components begin to vaporize and once their concentration in the overhead vapors becomes excessive, the batch process is terrninated. Alternatively, the process can be terrninated when the boiling point temperature reaches a certain level. The residual materials that are not vaporized are called still bottoms. [Pg.161]

The diverse types of plant in this category would be too numerous to list, but include steam-jacketed pans, steam calorifiers, steam heating and drying units and all types of air-pressure vessels. When an ophthalmic ointment is manufactured, all raw material components must be rendered sterile before compounding unless the ointment contains an aqueous fraction that can be sterilized by heat, filtration, or ionizing radiation. The ointment base is sterilized by heat and appropriately filtered while molten to remove extraneous foreign particulate matter.
