Giant powder

M.B. Powder (Modified Black Powder). Consisted of BkPdr in which part of the K nitrate was replaced by K perchlorate. The finely pulverized ingredients were preliminarily mixed, as in the prepn of BkPdr, and then incorporated together in a steam jacketed pan. The last operation was dangerous and some fires occurred, which were ascribed to friction in the hot, dry caked material. A similar expl was called Roslin Giant Powder Ref Marshall 1,385 (1917)... [Pg.65]

The few references in the literature indicated that glycerol had only been obtained in the crystalline state by chance. Inquiry among places storing large quantities of glycerol finally revealed some crystals at the plant of the Giant Powder Company at Manoose Bay, BC. [Pg.170]

Accdg to Dutton (Ref 58, pp 135—37), the first Amer Dynamite plant was constructed in California at a spot called Rock House Canyon near San Francisco. It was manned by Chinese, but supervisors were American. The plant, consisting only of shacks, was called Giant Powder Co . Great opposition to Dynamite was encountered from a plant constructed at Santa Cruz, The California Powder Works , manufacturers of BkPdr. When, however, the. [Pg.140]

Accdg to Blasters Hdbk(Ref 63, p4), Theodore Winkler an associate of A. Nobel, made in 1868 near San Francisco 3 pounds of Dynamite by mixing 1 part of Kieselguhr with 3 parts of NG. He used the facilities of Judson Sheppard Chemical Works of San Francisco and then demonstrated the strong action of this new expl by blasting boulders along the line of Bay Shore Railroad. Directly thereafter an American firm started to manuf in San Francisco NG and Dynamite with an inactive base, under the name of Nobel s Safety Powder or Giant powder No 1... [Pg.481]
